Usually when people say they live in Detroit they mean they live near Detroit. Lots of very nice areas a couple miles north or more from Detroit... like 15-20 min drive to downtown, but the area in between can be a war zone.

US median income is $29k a year. Where I live median income is $115k a year.

Metro Detroit is the 13th largest metropolitan area in US & the suburbs has higher population (like 4 mil) than Detroit itself. Downtown Detroit is nice but anywhere outside it would be a shit hole.
