sports leagues have just filed a lawsuit against Delaware
I just heard on the news that the four major sports leagues and the NCAA have teamed up and filed a lawsuit in federal court to stop Delaware from starting up its sportsbetting. I don't really know that much about it, but it seems that the leagues are claiming that Delaware is in violation of a 1992 federal law that bans sportsbetting in all but 4 states.
WTF, Delaware was one of the 4 states so the 4 leagues will probably be told to go pound sand.

You're right, they will be told to go fook themselves.

The Delaware Supreme Court has ruled on the issue, and even if the professional leagues try to go the Fed route---this is a states rights issue. Delaware as you mentioned is one of the 4 states that is/was grandfathered in, and Delaware will have sports wagering this fall.

This is never going to happen

Sports Leagues will win unless some big time politicians get involved backing gambling there

If it is overturned, they will need to stop it in Vegas also. Even with congressional help from assholes like Orin Hatch, and other you guessed it republicans, there efforts will fail because they are totally on the wrong side of the law and debate.

If it stops in Vegas, it's time to turn your investments liquid, and move to CR.

If this country didn't have religious right wing republicans in office sportsbetting would have been in the US a long time ago. Looked what happened with the prohibition. Did it actually stop people from drinking alcohol? No!

Sports leagues will win what exactly?

The leagues have two routes...the DE State Supreme Court--which already ruled in favor of the state having wagering.

The other is the Fed route. And no matter the political orientation of the judge, it is going to be almost impossible for the leagues to convince the judiciary that one state should have wagering (Nevada), and all others should be disciminated against.

That dog won't hunt. The leagues are just trying a token objection. They HAVE to object, but in the end they know they will lose.

I wonder if during the lawsuit Delaware will take bets?

If not they could take years of legal battles.

And that is a good point JJ---that may be what happens.

Tie it up in the court system and frustrate DE. Although, I would guess DE would ask all rulings to be fast tracked.

Unless a asswipe Federal Judge puts an injunction on the sports investing, we will have sports investments in Delaware even if there is a lawsuit pending. If the judge puts an injuction on the gaming, the state will file for fast track. At that point, we will see who has the weight of the law behind it, and you know it doesn't matter what the law says, it only matters who has the money and power behind it. I think there will be a big smack down of the leagues, partly because Vegas already does it.

You have to realize the federal government will do anything, anything, to stop this. They will break the law, put pressure on a judge, threaten people, anything. They are on the wrong side of the law but they don't care. They know they can't stop it completely, but if they can prevent single-game betting, that's what they'll settle for.

I give this Delaware governor huge credit for running with this plan. If the law is followed, these suits should be dismissed quickly. But we know that won't be easy.

If one were to follow the leagues argument, it must mean all European and Australian sports are crooked.

It depends on who has more power, the Feds or Senators and The Governor of Delaware.
