Vegas trip - more questions for locals & regulars
I'm flying down on Aug. 1 and I wanna do the old school sports betting thing, running from one sportsbook to the next. Questions:

    1) I've heard conflicting reports on whether laptops and cell phones are now allowed inside the sportsbooks. Can I freely sit in a book, open my laptop and fire up my line services? I'll be using my cell as a modem - is that frowned upon? How do you guys do it?

    2) I have rented a car for the duration of my trip, but I'm not sure how wise that is. How miserable is it driving on the strip during the day? Should I simply run to the next book if it's close enough and take the monorail if need be?

    3) Can one get comps based on sportsbook action? My plan B is to hit the good VP machines, but I'd rather just bet - VP variance makes my head spin and I find the game(s) mind-numbing.

    1) You can use cellphones, but if you are obviously using a cell/ computer to check lines, you will be told to leave.

    2) Forget about driving on the Strip. It's a nightmare.

    3) Sportbook action will get you little to no comps. You may get a bit at the Harrah's chain, but nothing at Venetian or Wynn/Encore.

Forget the comps for sports bets. Forget running from sportsbook to sportsbook, unless you are downtown. Most of these strip hotels are owned by the MGM/Mirage. The lines are all the same. Vegas sportsbook really suck nowadays. The new "M" is nice but they are all alone miles away from the next book or the strip for that matter.

You need a two man team to do this. One guy should be in the car checking lines on laptop and the other one should be inside the book placing bets when a steam move is detected on line service. You can communicate with bluetooth.

Been checking the lines for 2 weeks now and I have to disagree. Sure, the MGM/Mirage properties are all the same, but I'm seeing opinionated lines at Caesar's, Leroys and Luckys. Looking at a map though, these places are too far apart to make it by foot. Ugh.

Thanks for the replies so far.

I'm thinking that I could use a VNC setup to log on to my laptop remotely - I used to have a VNC client for my old Blackberry, it probably still exists.

That all sounds like a PITA though.

The Venetian has very opinionated lines occasionally.

lol, no but seriously he would know. I know he has had some close calls running to books. I remember him chasing a Citadel cbb line one night.

You shouldn't have much of a problem using your phone to check lines online. Just don't do it at the counter and you'll be fine. As for a laptop, I would imagine that is a no-no.

As others have said, phone is fine. You might even get away with having a computer open near the sportsbook or in it at a busy time, but if you are looking at lines and then going up to bet, you will get heat eventually.

For unqiue odds Venetian, Hilton, Wynn, and Leroys books are favorites.

you can mostly avoid the strip. (that is bad traffic) Half the strip is either Harrahs or mgm. You can work Stations, Coasts, Hilton, Palms, Leroys, (with occasional Rio or ceasars) and avoid the heart of the strip.
Walking would be better from one strip casino to another, but that's not what you'd want to do.

Only running Monkeyf0cker does is from the sharks he owes.

Matty, what kind of action are you bring to sportsbook? Come on pal, you will not be betting enough to even think about comps.

Just enjoy the cheap buffets and drunk chicks

Just bringing 5k to play with and hoping to stick to that mathy, but I'll withdraw another 5k if need be - in light of the answers I got so far, I'm thinking that I will most likely play $100 3-teamers and/or $200 2-teamers while rolling over the free balance in VP. I can reliably play 1000 hands an hour (so 5k rollover per hour in dollar machines) of Jacks or Better or Deuces Wild and I'm currently practicing Double Bonus (100.17%), which is a bitch to memorize.

Either way, I will get comps. I'm no jjgold, but I have half a clue.

I always rent a car and have no problem getting around hotels. You need to know when you can ride the strip and when you need to take back roads. If your going to more than 2 or 3 casino's its alot easier to have a car then waiting for taxi's. Some nights the taxi lines maybe 2/3 deep. Self parking is usually quicker then valet as well.

Take your laptop to a restaurant but once in the book, forget about it. It's a lot easier to have 3 or 4 guys in different spots then you trying to make the rounds.

you can stay 4qeens next door. Less than 2hrs a day on $1 db will comp you everything. +.3% cashback.( you supposed to stick to the flat tops except for 25c. For some reason they say $1 prog doesn't give comps at same rate.)

also, if you want to do downtown, quite easy to shop around some good lines. Their limits are small, but big enough for what you're saying. Some ugly, depressing looking people here though.

Thanks for the tips. Hadn't considered staying outside the strip, but I'll shop around to see where the better comps are. I'm leaving Vegas after a week and coming back later for another week (Aug. 16 to 23). Hoping to be staying and eating for free at that point.

reno cool is right on the 4Queens comps. He recommended it to me last year. I played six hours of $1 video last summer at the bash and I got full RFB for this whole year. And they actually have good food. Hugo's Cellar is even comped once a trip.

ok so some of the books on the strip they will make a fuss about the phone .. but usually you can use it in the book, just not up at the line.. you can't even write your plays down on your phone and go up to the counter and read them off your phone...

If you want the real sportsbook experience , then there is only 1 place in all of las vegas really worth checking out.. and thats the Las Vegas Hilton.. the Superbook is hands down the best book in Vegas and I have been to most of them...

As far as comps go.. you really aren't going to get any from sports... but at least you get to drink for free and get paid on the spot if you win....

If you want a good deal try staying at the Hilton as well.. me and friends (about 10 of us) went to vegas during the Sweet 16 and elite 8... many of them work a regular 9 to 5 so they couldn't show up till friday, but i own my own business and left a day early since the games started Thursday night.. I booked the hotel like 2 days before and paid like 40 bucks, for a huge room.. the only downside is the bathroom is pink.. What is also good about the Hilton is that it has a monorail stop built into the hotel.. buy a pass while you there and you can bounce from there back to the middle of the main strip in like 3 mins for cheap... Also the Hilton has a great deli/grill next to the book that is very affordable and good.

If you rent a car.. what is also nice about the hilton is that there is parking just for the sports book in the back.. you can pull up behind the hotel.. park with no fuss.. walk in buy or cash your tickets and be on your way in 3 mins flat without any headache...

If this is one of your first trips you must go to Oshea's gambling establishment next to the Venetian.. its an irish themed casino.. that is more spring break , then it is casino.. its the only place on the strip that i have seen 35 dollar sit and go's next to Beer Pong Tables.. CLASSY!!!!

when you are done with your trip be sure to stop by the Steakhouse in Circus Circus.. the food is top shelf and the price is extremely fair for the cut of meat you get.. its a vegas local favorite...

hope this helps.. feel free to pm me with any questions homie... have fun and good luck!!

You need to min bet $300 to even get drink tickets now at Wynn but cell phones are definitely allowed.
