Hong Kong's over-the-moon skywatchers watch out: this morning's eclipse of the sun could seriously damage your eyes.Barring an unexpected late change in the weather, Hongkongers will have clear views for an exceptionally long eclipse.
But hundreds of people who have traveled from Hong Kong to Shanghai and other parts of the mainland in the hope of witnessing a total eclipse may be disappointed by heavy clouds.
While skywatchers here will have to be satisfied with only a partial 70 percent eclipse when the moon shadows the sun from 8.16am to 10.47am, that 151-minute duration is a time span that will not come around again for another 300 years.
Maximum visibility is at 9.27am, according to the Hong Kong Observatory, which forecasts fine conditions apart from isolated showers.
But safe viewing of the phenomenon, which will sweep over a wide swath of Asia, is another matter.
"The observation should not be made directly with the naked eye or through telescopes as this can cause permanent damage to the eyes," a Hong Kong Space Museum spokesman cautions. "The eclipse should be observed with a projection method or using equipment with a light-filtering system."
Doctors at the Chinese University of Hong Kong's Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences also take a guarded view.

#8So what you actually meant to say was that one lasting 151 minutes won't happen for 300 years? Silly me for not realising this.Originally posted by wtf

Most people view eclipses in terms of quality (the proportion of the sun which is eclipsed) over quantity (the length). Anyhow, here are some nice images of it:
