Tom Watson--good guy---but still. Actually he is 59--but I am rounding up.

This settles the argument about golf being a sport.

I have yet to see a 60 year being signed by anyone in MLB, NFL, or the NHL. Although Jamie Moyer is getting close.

Anyway, Watson shot a 5-under 65 to take the opening round lead in the British.

Oh absolutely, theres no way anything could be considered a sport if a 60 year old can play. That wouldnt make sense at all.

Not just play. But lead one of the major championships in the "sport".

I am pretty sure 60 year old Tommy John can't pitch any longer, and I can't imagine what a 60 year old point guard would look like running around the court in the NBA.

He will be no where near leaderboard by the end if tourney .

This happens from time to time in British Open.

I think Norman was right in final group last year and shot like an 82 or something and he is like 52.

Gold chiming in pretty much guarantees Watson will win the whole thing now.

Look what happened to Federer when Gold told us Roddick was going to win.

Someone should just hand Watson the trophy now.

I think that may be a tad different.

And as for the sport thing, your "argument" here carries no weight.

Either way, glad to see Watson doing well, it should get the fans excited for tomorrow.

My golf game sucks donkey balls. Listen, my hat is off to Watson. I hope the old man wins it all---what a story that would be.....Watson returns to Turnberry where he beat Jack 32 years ago? You couldn't write that story.

                But that isn't the point.

I just don't know how someone 60 years old can compete in a major championship.....even if only for one round.

                Let's apply it to Tennis.

Anyone really think 60 year old Chris Evert could take a set off of any of the young tennis players today? I just wouldn't want to see a 60 year old Chrissie running around the court---it wouldn't be pretty.

It isn't an "argument". It is an observation. Golf is the only---only---"sport" where a 60 year old can compete at a championship level.

A 60 year old in any other sport trying to compete would be ridiculous.

Yes, but to use that as a reason why golf ISN'T a sport as you tried to do doesnt make sense and holds no weight as an argument.

If you want a more credible argument, check out this quote from Mark Calcavechia

"If it had been some other tournament other than this one, I may have not come," he said. "But, you know, once I got done, I took a few more Aleve and a couple of beers and I was OK, got on the plane, and several more beers went flowing down. The next thing you know we were landing and I felt pretty good on Monday."

I have to disagree MB...I do believe you have forgotten about the sport of lawn bowls!

A pre-requisite to play the game is that you have to be 60+, had a hip replacement, have piss dribbling down your leg and eat your food through a straw.

Oh, I wanted to be clear on something. Just because Watson is doing this at 60 doesn't make it easy.

Golf is as tough as anything I have tried. That little friggin white ball is a nightmare to hit.

Thirty years ago, for a brief period of time I played to a 2 handicap and could hit over 300 yds from the tee on many occasions with a wooden driver.

Now at age 62, it's only about -130 that I won't fall over when trying put my underbritches on while standing up. And that is when completely sober.

I am John Daly at 62, assuming he is still sucking air by then. Quite a long shot IMHO should sombody hang a futures prop number on it.

Body is beyond repair, but the analytical, cappin' mind is still .

Tremendous achievement for a 60 yr. old. Kudos!!!

Lakerboy you are correct about Watson shooting an 80 tomorrow.

Golf is the toughest sport in the world to be good. Our world's best athletes cannot even break par and they play a lot , 95% of population could not even hit a ball straight one time out of 30.

More if a chance kicking a field goal vs hitting a golf ball straight.

Why don't you make a video kicking a FG since it is so easy? Then I will make a video of hitting a golf ball straight.
