I really want to know what sbrforum.com posters think about this issue. I expect to be seriously enlightened.

There may be a god, but religion is man made, what club are you in?

True story - I witnessed an old man dying today. The first time his wife looked very upset and was rubbing his shoulder as he laid there all tubed up and just a shell of a man on death's door. The doctors were standing around talking to her and she was not listening.

About 2 hours later I walked by again and the wife was crying uncontrollably into what I assume were the arms of newly arrived family members.

So yes, I believe there is a God. And he enjoys making old ladies cry.

Oh you asked about religion...no clue.

All religion is is a gathering of people who have the same set of beliefs. Its not religion that matters, its what you believe in. Going to church is not necessary. But if you believe in God then you will want to go to church to learn.

Bread, as a Christian in the Bible Belt, when a fellow Christian dies we have a funeral and then celebrate. Because that person is now in paradise. Sure the family is upset and really never gets over it, but at the same time they are at peace with it, knowing the person is not suffering in any way anymore.

Our time spent on Earth is not even noteworthy when you compare it to eternity.

All Religion is brainwashing. People want and need something to believe in. It gives them hope. It is for the weak minded people if you ask me.

There is no doubt that religion is very real. It's as real as a heart attack. The details are man-made but real-world stuff happens - good and bad - as a result. It's as real as governments.

It is amazing to me that people buy into these things. Anyone who is not a child should be able to recognize how it is all nonsense on a par with Santa Clause and whatnot.

But society is cluing in with increasing speed. Religion is losing power all the time. Compare the power of religion now to 50 years ago, 100 years ago, 500 years.

All things die - including religions. In the case of religions, they become mythology. There are no exceptions. It is only question of how fast it happens.

Trends would suggest it won't take as long for all the current religions to make that transition as it did for, say, the Greek/Roman/Egyptian batch of gods to.

The only correct philosophy btw is agnosticism. Agnosticism simply means being honest. The correct answer to questions like, "What created all this?" and "What happens after we die?" is I don't know.

To me, that does not seem like such a bad thing but many many humans are still too freaked out by the truth and opt instead for foma (comforting lies).

75% of the US is weak minded then. Millions of doctors, physicists, aeronautical engineers, etc. are Christians. People who give up pursuit of any monetary gain for their whole life to help others (missionaries and humanitarians) are weak minded people? No, it takes a damn strong minded person to do something so selfless.

Just off the top of my head, Strom Thurmond, a guy who was racist in his early years just like most of the south was at the time, turned his life around, and ended up doing more for the black people of South Carolina than any other person ever has (yes even any civil rights leader or Abe Lincoln. James Brown considered Strom to be his best friend because of his giving to the black people in Brown's birth state).

He was in his 40's and had the world at his fingertips when he demanded to be sent down behind German lines on D-Day. He was rising quickly in political world and knew he had a huge career ahead of him. That wasn't enough, he felt he needed to serve his country and GIVE BACK. He was under constant fire from German soldiers as he fought his way through France, capturing 4 German soldiers along the way and saving who knows how many lives. He was a Christian......but he was weak minded?

The life story of Strom Thurmond, one of America's most enduring political figures. Starting life in the public service in the 1920s and serving in the US Army during World War II, he long held political ambitions which were realised with more than 48 continuous years service in the Senate.

Needless to say that history is filled with endless stories like the one above with Christians sacrificing their lives and putting their lives on the line in order to simply help other people. The United States was founded by Christians. They fought off the British, one of the worlds biggest empires, despite not even being a nation, but they are weak minded as a group?

              I disagree with you strongly.

People who live their lives based on a religion haven't evolved. Religions are a thing of the past.

Who else would believe in an old man building a huge ark and pairing every animal on Earth and making sure they mated. If you believe in religious books that say these type of things...then something is wrong with you. I know what some of these Christians will say, "Oh well that was just a parable." Proof? They only now call it a parable because even they know this story can't be true...so they need a good excuse as to why it's in the book.

I was "talking" to God just the other day, actually he sent me an e-mail.

he said: "Take NY +4.5 in the WNBA for 1 unit"

BTW, "God's" pick came in, but you expected that, right?
