Do you guys believe in fate??
I know it might sound a little Rogue Scholarish but I'm serious. Do any of you believe in fate or destiny?

Like no matter what we are all destined for something and it pulls us in that direction or chance things really arent chance??

I know I might sound like a lunatic but I have a reason for this and will post it after I hear what you guys think... or I might go play in traffic if all you pricks rain on my parade

Are you talking about meeting a woman to spend the rest of your life with or just in general?

I don't believe in fate. I think its a poor mentality, lazy and arrogant. Why should we assume we deserve anything, or have any entitlement to anything on earth? Life appears random and chaotic, I see no higher meaning.

But, if it helps people to think like this I see no harm in it. Validity of an idea is not as important as its effect I suppose.

I just mean fate in general guys... Like you take a wrong turn coming back from Pennsylvania with $3k worth of fireworks and you find out that you missed a checkpoint on the original route you were supposed to take.

Or you go to a store, running an hour late for work, and bump into this chick that turns out to be from your same home town and actually lives on your CURRENT street, less than 5 blocks away.

Shit like that... You guys don't believe in fate?

VegasDave I thought for sure you would be a believer man...

Right before I moved from North Carolina to Vegas the lottery was still fairly new to the state....me and my buddy one night got high and started talking about how stupid people were for playing the lottery and how they hold up the lines at the store scratching off their tickets, throwing away their life savings.
As we continued to smoke we talked about how much dumb luck is involved to win the lottery and how people pick their numbers. I referenced the show "The Lottery Changed My Life" on TLC and we started talking about how one guy picked his favorite players from the Atlanta Braves #'s numbers and won (Chipper 10, Andruw Jones 25, etc.)
We start talking about what numbers we would play and I said 23 for Michael Jordan and 5 because that was the # I always had in high school (also my birthday) he was a huge Cal Ripken Jr. fan so he said I'd play 8 and 17 for my birthday....the conversation ended there so we went back inside and he turned on the TV.
First channel he turns it to was the George Lopez Show, which neither of us had ever watched....within 30 seconds George Lopez turns to one of the characters on the show and says "well you know you can never win the lottery if you don't play" and starts laughing then we start laughing.
That show goes to commercial, my friend randomly enters channel 154 into the remote and we are then watching the National Geographic Channel, the show is about morgues and showing how they tag bodies. Within 30 seconds they show a tag on a bodies foot and it is #23, at the time it didn't register we had just talked about that number, 5 seconds later the camera pans back and 5 tags are across the screen in front of a solid brown backdrop 5 8 17 23 35. Still not registering and being high I said pause it "that's our numbers right there" he said I don't have pause but I got them. He goes over to the counter and writes them down. We look at each other dumbfounded and rehash everything we just talked about outside.
By now the high has worn off because we are so shaken and defiantly think this is some kind of signal. Everything we had just talked about outside is being played out right in front of us on the TV. Since neither of us had ever played we didn't know what game to play these numbers with, and we couldn't figure out the significance of 35. His mom plays the lottery all the time so he was getting ready to call her when he looked at the clock and it was 9:30, she is usually asleep by 9:00pm. So we go to the internet and look up the rules and games and plan on going to play Pick 5 tomorrow.
A minute after game planning I get a call from my travel agent (a family friend) who is out eating with my dad and she says my flight to Vegas has been canceled for Thursday. I was thinking that’s pretty random another sign I’m going to win, my flight is cancelled because I’m not going back. Her husband owns 3 local convenience stores in the area so I told my friend I know where I'm going to play my #'s.
We swear each other to secrecy convinced by now we have the winning numbers in our hands and don't want to split the prize with anyone else.
The following day I had this feeling and just knew something good was going to come from this and I was holding back everything from telling my brother this crazy story.
I go to Tommy's Mini-Mart around 3:00pm the next day to buy my ticket, my buddy was going at 3:30pm when he got his break from work. I go in and Tommy (the owner) is working the counter which is weird cause I never see him working. Talk to him for a minute about my flight being cancelled and he said his wife was would be contacting me later today.
I ask him how to fill out the ticket, because I had never played....he gives me the basic rundown, 1st time I fill it out wrong, he tells me to fill out another form and I fill that out wrong as well, for some reason I just couldn't comprehend what he was saying.
So for my 3rd attempt I looked up at the wall right beside me with the previous winning numbers posted to make sure I filled out this card right.
So I'm following this huge card with previous winning numbers and I notice my numbers are posted on the wall, I see 5 8 17 23 35....and am very confused to what is going on. I look at date on the Card and they are yesterday's winning numbers!
So I get up go outside call my friend, he doesn't answer call him 6 more times in a row, then text him to answer my fking call. He finally calls back, and I tell him you will not believe this shit, our winning numbers are on the wall it was yesterdays Pick 5 , he says bullshit then hangs up on me. A minute later he text me, saying he nearly threw up and was leaving work after he went to the website and saw I was not bullshitting.

                        Fate?

                          Sorry to disappoint you...

I believe that there are cool coincidences, sure.

But for every time that you take a wrong turn and miss a checkpoint or you are an hour late for work and run into that girl, there will be an equal number of times that that wrong turn leads you right into the checkpoint you would have otherwise missed, and if you hadn't been running late, you would have run into that girl but you missed her today because the car wouldn't start.

Yes, every little event has an impact on your entire day and beyond. But it is good just as often as its bad. If it was all pre-determined? Depressing how many people live miserable lives because it was destined to be so.

Tell me about it....although I have told this story 100's of times, it still pains me to relive the string of events every time I tell it.
Maybe the sickest part of it all, which we didn't find out till later is we still had 30 minutes to go to the store right down the street and play the #'s. The drawings don't close until 10:00pm each night for the following day, but for whatever reason it never crossed our minds to go to the store right then and we waited till the next day which was too late.

Sure I do. If Arizona beat Pittsburgh, I would've been drinking beers on your tab in Syracuse for a raucous weekend.

Fate. There is fate. But it only takes you so far, because once you're there, it's up to you to make it happen.

                                                Fate?

Here is the history of all Carolina Cash 5 winning drawings direct (from the North Carolina Education Lottery homepage) dating back to that lottery's inception on October 27, 2006.

Oddly enough, the combination 5-8-17-23-35 has (as of this posting) never won.

If you read the entire story you would know we didn't win shit, we were a day late. I think the potential payout was over $160,000. Ask Dazzez he seems to know everything and has nothing but time to look up things like this.

Considering how long my post already was I didn't find it necessary to break down every detail.....that wasn't the purpose of the post, but I forgot how many smart asses were actually on this site. My friend went to Cooperstown when Cal Ripken was inducted into the Hall of Fame, that was on the 9th of January or February I believe....being the significance of 9 which is also the number after 8 which is the number Cal wore (8 or 9 who gives a fk we didn't win). Before you ask, I'm not sure what time my friend woke up before going to the ceremony. Don't know what he ate for breakfast. Don't know what time he left the hotel. Not sure if he took a taxi or rented a car. I didn't ask him how many stop lights he went through or how many right turns were made before reaching his destination. Don't know how many steps he took once he parked the car or exited the taxi. If he took a taxi I don't know how much money he tipped the driver.
When I look at it from your perspective it does make sense, I pulled the 5 17 23 35 out of my ass and randomly chose 8 instead of 9, not knowing you would spend hours digging up all the previous Pick 5 winners in NC history. My fabricated story was exposed, but I got lucky and noticed on September 2, the winning numbers were 5 9 17 23 35 wow what a coincidence all the numbers are exactly the same except for one is off by one number. Using your logic, it is impossible for anyone to make a mistake so lets beat this into the ground since my life sucks and I have nothing better to do.

My guess is you and your friend have no life, so you go around forums looking for stories in relation to lotteries where the person didn't win anything, then question every part of the story as if he is claiming to have won $10 million dollars. Happens in religion all the time.

Anyway I think we both know you should probably go back to doing what you do best....and that would be sucking 8===D.
