Suppose you lose 3-4 games in a row-- one by blowout, one by a point, another by 7-8 points.... what could you possibly learn from those 3 losses?Comment -
I'll answer from my perspective. You can't learn anything from 4 losses, but after 30+ losses patterns start to emerge and you can learn from them. Every system(read: selection method) has leaks, just like winning poker players have leaks with certain hands at certain positions in certain formats at certain blind levels. You won't learn about the leaks unless you keep meticulous records with comments next to each pick. For example your leak could be NCAAB double digit home dogs. Do you know your exact record with such dogs? If not, you're not keeping good enough records.
You don't have to worry about variance if the picks have a good enough edge. Making 30 picks a day is not the way to go. Our single advantage over the bookies is that we can pick our spots with the biggest edge instead of betting 500 games a day. This also takes discipline. My very best systems have like 2 selections a week, but I'm not disciplined enough to make 2 bets a week, so I explore other options in the meantime. Quality wins over quantity every time in this business. I'd rather bet $1000 on super solid info than 5x $200 on mediocre 4% value picks where variance does indeed suck.Comment -
