are all poker players unrepentant liars?
interesting article in local hong kong paper today

they are covering the growing poker scene in macau

of course they interview some of the "professionals"

almost all them end up playing poker after getting canned from their super high paying jobs as brain surgeons and arbitrage traders of incredibly complicated financial instruments only the highest order mathematician can fathom

then all of them claim without fail that they earns at minimum 200k per annum, most in the millions

    this leads me to some interesting questions;

    * is there that much DEAD money out there?

    * who are these people being lead to slaughter to be fleeced by these "professionals"

    * if everyone plays by the same rules, which are being pretty much followed universally then luck must play a huge factor

    * or all these guys are grossly exaggerating their revenue

I remember when ben affleck started playing with the big boys and was getting fleeced, he took a few lessons from that girl (sister of the math genius) after that he was holding his own and even winning. thus leading me to believe ANYONE being taught the fundamentals can win or at least avoid getting murdered.

You're talking about Howard Lederer's sister Annie Duke. I wouldn't exactly call Howard Lederer a math genius, though. But yeah, you have to know the fundamentals of poker in order to have any success in the long run. These beginners seem to have a lot of success without knowing the game but end up broke in the long run.

I've always thought these professionals exaggerated their revenue in order to bring more suckers into the game. They make most of their money from TV and being the face of one of the online poker rooms.

WTF - did you ever hear of Andy Beal? A Texas-based businessman who's worth a fortune.

        Wiki...
During several visits between 2001 and 2004, Beal played a syndicate of professional poker players known as "The Corporation", which included Doyle Brunson, Chip Reese, Todd Brunson, Ted Forrest, Jennifer Harman, Howard Lederer, Phil Ivey, Gus Hansen, Barry Greenstein, Chau Giang, and others. Beal hoped to force the collective group of pros into such high stakes that their play would be influenced by the amount of money at risk. By the end of their encounters in 2004 they were playing $100,000/$200,000 Limit Texas hold 'em heads up with more than $20 million on the table. This story was chronicled in Michael Craig's book, The Professor, the Banker, and the Suicide King: Inside the Richest Poker Game of All Time.
While the games outlined in Craig's book ended in 2004, Beal returned to Las Vegas from February 1-5, 2006 to again take on "The Corporation" in a $50,000/100,000 Limit Hold 'Em match at the Wynn Las Vegas Casino. Opponents included Todd Brunson, Jennifer Harman, Ted Forrest, and others.
On February 5, 2006, Beal was down $3.3 million (USD). He then returned to the Wynn a week later, and won approximately $13.6 million from the Corporation during daily poker sessions from February 12-15.[1] The games resumed February 21-23, with Phil Ivey representing the Corporation against Beal at limits of $30,000/60,000 and $50,000/100,000. During these three days, Beal lost $16.6 million to Ivey.[2]
Beal is recognized as the poker player who won more money in a poker game in a single day than any other known poker player. On Thursday, May 13, 2004, at the Las Vegas Bellagio, Beal won $11.7 million from Chip Reese, Hamid Dastmalchi, Gus Hansen, and Jennifer Harman.[3]

LOL Yeah - definitely a lie. He's no math genius.

There are a couple math geniuses who play poker but he's not one of them. One being Chris Ferguson and the other Andy Bloch (He was part of the MIT Blackjack Team that took millions from Vegas)
