FDA May Ban Percocet and Vicodin

Life may get a little more painful. A federal advisory panel voted on Tuesday to ban Percocet and Vicodin, two of the world's most popular prescription painkillers, because of their harmful effects on the liver. The ingredient in question is acetaminophen--found in Tylenol, Excedrin and other over-the-counter drugs--which, in high doses, is a leading cause of liver damage. In 2005, Americans bought 28 billion doses of products containing the ingredient, and more than 400 people die and 42,000 are hospitalized every year in the U.S. from overdoses. The panel also voted to reduce the amount of acetaminophen in over-the-counter drugs and lower the recommended daily dosage. While the F.D.A. isn't required to heed its recommendations, they usually follow advisory panels' advice.

I'm not a fan of too much acetaminophen, which is why I extract it from my painkiller of choice (codeine)...

Good luck on the surgery. Had one myself day after Xmas and feeling decent now. I've taken a lot of these pills and they are soooo addictive. My only hope is to stay away. I am currently drug free.

Percocet didn't even touch the hip pain that I had last year prior to surgery. Vicodin, that was a different story. When I took that to sleep 10 years ago after achilles surgery, I couldn't sleep without it for a while. Only time in my life I was dependent on something, even though it was only for a couple of days.

I am sure they have supplements for both that work.

The pinched nerve in my l5/l6 last Nov/Dec didn't ease one bit with either of these pain killers. The doc said they wouldn't rid the pain, but he gave them to me anyhow. I did use them for a high.
