What July 4th Means To Me
When I was 12, I was a gangly kid "finding his way physically. I was already 6 foot, and my shoe size was already 13. Anyway, in the month of June, I started to grow this growth on the outside of my left big toe. As a kid, I ignored it, thinking it would go away. Well June became July and the thing grew and looked as big as a cherry tomato. The touch of it caused major pain, and it bled and pussed. Well On July 4th, I was at a bungaloo in New Jersey when I took my shoe of in front of my mother. She flipped when she saw this thing protruding out of my toe. I remember hearing firewroks outside as my mom was asking me 1000 questions about this thing on my toe. Anyway, the next day we went to a doctor who curtly said "We will have to amputate the toe". Telling that to a 12 year old is traumatizing. Well my mom was having none of that, so we went to a bunch of other doctors and found out it was an "Exostosis". They ended up doing TWO surguries on it, and I had to wear sneakers with a hole on the big toe for about 6 months. I was a laughingstock of school because I had a hole in my shoe with a cherry tomato sticking out of. My grandmother also thought spray painting my sneakers grey was a cool idea. Oh boy. I definately cooralate my gambling to that incident. I started gambling at 12 when I couldn't play sports, my stepfather committing suicide, and the Red Sox losing the World Series. I shit you not. I added apicture of an exostosis. Mine was a lot larger, but it should give you an idea of what I had. Thanks for letting me share.

That is such a great July 4th story it almost makes me wish I was American. From now on, when I hear The Star-Spangled Banner, I will salute and think of weird, ugly things growing out of toes.

It used to mean spending a good 10 hours or so smoking a brisket and then shooting off fireworks with the nephews and nieces. But since beef is no longer part of the diet I will be grilling turkey burgers this year. And with no rain here for so long, we can't shoot aerial fireworks in these parts this year.

Sorry about the toe thing, casper. Not even sure I'm going to be able to eat turkey burgers after seeing the photo.

Very creative. Surprised you are still coherent after our night of debauchery.

I wonder if the Founding Fathers had gnarly toes. I would like to think so.
