I work in hospitals....I have been talking to some ICU docs and nurses and asking them about West Nile. They have never heard of a case like this.

There seem to be stories trickling out about it now. I'm not going to say what I just read about one, but it wasn't good. Keeping things positive in here.

I'm just curious if this happened to him in Minnesota or Vegas. Apparently mosquitoes like warm weather.

It had to have been in minny. Mosquitos like humid climate around water. Vegas is neither and he was feeling ill on the plane what I heard. Had to have been on one of his many lake trips this summer

friends kid died of dengue fever in philippines. Seems weird something so small can cause so much damage

Saw BigDay for about thirty minutes with his mother, Mindy and a nurse. I told Andy that all of SBR was pulling for him. I said we are all patiently waiting for his famous PoundPlay. I gave him a pound/fist and he was able to give me his pound. I squeezed his hand and he squeezed mine. He continues to fight and work on his speech. It was an awesome first visit of many. Gaining momentum

I know some of you are eagerly awaiting an update, so here it is!

Andy has been busy working hard the physical therapy (PT), occupational therapy (OT) and Speech. Yesterday, we learned that it is very clear that he is understanding everything that is talked about whether he is in the conversation or not. Yesterday, Lynn and I were talking about what time she should come home to the girls so that I could go to my evening school event (YES, I went to my new school and met families and students!). At 3:30pm Andy looked at Lynn and she just knew he was trying to tell her something. He mouthed 'Don't you have to go?' and looked at the clock. Lynn told Andy that she didn't have to go until 4pm. For me this is very exciting because it means multiple things: he is comprehending, he is telling time and he is also advocating for me to have some time.

Yesterday, Andy also had a little set back and was talking with his speech therapist about how his trach popped out during PT. Andy was able to tell us how it crunched and hurt as it was put back in. There is a little swelling but he also states it doesn't hurt any more. The PT team felt so bad, he also told them he wasn't mad at them about it. Accidents happen! Today his PT team is challenging him to work on his trunck strength now that he has gained more head control. Today the support was taken away and he was able to maintain holding himself up for about 10 seconds! Now to gain more trunk control without the tables.

The ICU team stated that his MRI shows typical of a west nile patient. My question was, what does that mean? They stated they didn't see anything really alarming (YEAH!!) and the wondering was how long and how much he would recover physically, which only time will tell. There is talk about transitioning to Health East Bethesda Hospital (LTAC) next week.

Four Weeks

It has been four weeks in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and there is talk about a possible transfer to Bethesda tomorrow.

Today Andy worked with PT, OT, and speech. They used a speaking valve again today and he is working really hard on using his lungs so that words can be heard! In his OT session they had him trying to write. PT continues to work on sitting and gaining trunk strength. Today he continued to run a low grade fever, which is typical of west nile and even through this he is working so hard!

Last night I spent the first night in my own bed since this journey begun. Andy said, go take care of the girls followed by tell them I love them. My lip reading isn't very good and I miss many things he is trying to tell me but those two were clear as day! Andy is beginning to tell us what he wants which is great! He also has informed us to go sit down, we can leave, I want to sleep, etc. I am glad he is able to advocate for some of his needs.

Good evening, #TeamAndy:

Today we moved into our new space at Bethesda Hospital (LTAC). When I returned to Andy this morning, he was talking to me (lips only) and I thought he said Bethesda, then I asked if the doctors were in, he told me yes. I asked if they talked about Bethesda, he said yes. I asked if he was sure, he replied YES! Well, I really thought he was confused and only said Bethesda because he knew I was going touring it. So I stepped out of his room and asked the ICU team if they had been in already. The team of doctors stated that they had been in and spoke with Andy. Well after a conversation with the team, Andy was telling me exactly what they said, he was transferring to Bethesda in the afternoon!

We are settling in and hopeful that the recovery will continue. Andy is determined and willing to do the work and making progress daily. Of course it is not at the rate he would like it AND we are going to celebrate the gains!
