So after you subtract a few million athletes who play the 4 major sports (which is really 3 because hockey isnt that popular), you should be left with millions of other athletes who could take up soccer.

We have gone to 3 world cup finals with just a pop. of 17 million, the best you guys have done is 1 QF

Best athletes in MLB, NBA and NFL =/= best athletes in soccer. Soccer is highly technical, just because you're good at NBA doesnt mean you'd automatically be good at soccer assuming you had chosen an MLS career instead.

Also, no African country has ever made it past the semifinals, and the African continent has a population of over 1 billion.

I have no doubt the US would be a lot better at world cups if it was your national sport, but to say you'd be a powerhouse is a bit premature

I liked this news. It was pretty cool when the World Cup was in the US in 1994, assuming one lived near one of the cities hosting the games. I'm no more than a casual soccer guy, but Los Angeles had a good vibe with a great many games in the Rose Bowl.

Not taking anything away from the very impressive results of the Dutch in sports. The "leftover" athletes that play soccer here are playing against who? It's not competitive, we don't have programs, etc. If kids inclined to play soccer were sent to other countries where it was the main sport, they would develop. Here, you don't get laid playing soccer. Until that changes, of course we will never produce good teams. Any more than the Dutch will produce a basketball team.
