Its the Knockout stage , and its where they seperate the contenders from the pretenders. I admire the work rate that this Japanese team has , but depth is just not at the same level as Belgium's. Todays game against Poland was a very good example of happens when you are so reliant on a small core of players ( Haraguchi , Osaka , Kagawa ...). They tend to burnt out since every game was a dire situation in order to qualify. Belgium used todays game against England as a " kickabout " and rested several key players like Hazard , Lukaku , Mertens...
I mean no disrespect to the great effort that Japan has put in to get to this game , but it will take its toll and show against a much better side with BIG aspirations imo.

Watching both games today showed that Pogba can play great football when he feels inspired. That M'bappe has amazing pace and skill , and that he is playing off of 2 very clinical marksmen in Greizman and Giroud. Uruguay are relentless on defence and have a great 1....2 punch with Suarez and Cavani. When Cavani pulled up with a late injury ( looked like a calf muscle ), Suarez became an island up front , and chances were rare. I have no idea if Cavani will be 100% by Friday, but i dont think we will see + money on France if he isnt.

Mexico are starting with a 4 - 3 - 3 formation that includes Vela , Chicharito and Lozano upfront. With Brazil having some new faces in their back 4 , it seems to be a wise move to put pressure on Brazil in their own half. It really should create some scoring opportunities from the outset.Comment -

I realize that Lichsteiner has a very nice resume , having played in many big games for Juventus , and now on Arsenal's roster. The guy plays " old style " football by always putting an elbow into your back , or giving you that nudge just prior to a set piece. No doubt his experience will be missed. The problem with him , and tomorrow's suspension , is a result of his 34 year frame starting to show its age. He is no longer with Juventus for a good reason. He plays clutch and grab football all game long and i have no problem seeing him replaced by M. long ( a very solid player at B. Moenchengladbach ), who can also play midfield with decent ball skills. The guy they will miss more imo , is Shar. They may end up putting Moubandje from Toulouse into his position , or sliding him to the outside position where his pace is an asset. Injured for Sweden is a key midfielder Larsson , where The Swiss are stacked with experience in Shaqiri , Xhaka , Behrani and Dzemaili. I see a big edge to the Swiss there.
