I can't believe the OKC announcer is getting grilled for using "Cotton picking mind".
That phrase is older than dirt and because people are so outraged by everything that goes on today, they're going to bitch. Never have I thought race and I've heard black people use that expression.

Shoe. I was thinking the same exact thing. Haven`t heard it in a while, but in the back of my mind it was a catch phrase on some TV show when I was a kid. Never in my life would I have heard it and thought there was a racial component.
Today though, as I hear it and think of the climate and from a AA`s perspective, yeah, simply can`t say that on a live broadcast covering a game in a league of 80% black players.
Though, I do believe Russell Westbrook is out of his cotton picking mind.

I had someone under 30 yrs old who owed me money for a football pool. I texted him "What's the story"? He flipped out thinking I was accusing him of being a liar.
I had to explain to him it's the same as saying..."What's up?"

We can make things fit whatever we want in many cases. Good grief.
Linguist Gary Martin over at The Phrase Finder has found that "cotton-picking" is actually a pretty old term, dating back to the first European cotton plantations in the 1700s, but that it only really showed up as an adjective in the 1940s. And in the examples he found, it referred to Southerners in general, not just blacks.

White cotton pickers?
Think the giant chicken (FogHorn LegHorn?) on Looney Tunes was the one that said it the most.

Are you guys out of your cotton pickin' minds?
It is an ancient expression usually directed toward someone that does something extremely stupid, used toward all races.

Unless there is some backstory here or some other context, I think the outrage is pretty silly. I've heard and used that phrase before and it has nothing to do with race, or cotton really. It's just a turn of phrase. Never really thought of it as a racial phrase.

In hindsight, we really should’ve picked our own cotton.

Your country sold out to cultural marxism decades ago where have you been. Its just been fast tracked the last few years because the puppeteers are finalizing their globalization. Way past the demoralization stage, thats long been completed. Trump is put out front to will finalize it.

that is an incredibly racist statement. Should have been fired. 'old' does not mean acceptable. Doubt he says 'cotton-pipkin' if it was a white player. You have to be smarter than that.

Old and harmless term..
Is becoming a damn shame that just about everything said today is racist or has a racial under tone to it.. Statues of American historic figures are now racist too... Liberal society and blacks coming unhinged and unglued...
Many White people picked cotton as well just for the record though out history... It's called farming work...

Not at all, term has been used toward white people many times. This is much ado about nothing.
