Agree with what Lou said, it was likely a subtle put down from the General referring not to her capacity as a Senator but rather to her status as a woman. He wouldnt have called a male senator "sir", he would have called him "senator." She hardly said more than that. Did she need to say she worked hard for it? No, but she also seemed tied and sometimes people say things, although if she took the General as being implicitly sexist it makes sense that shed remind him of her position. military protocol advises that officers may use "sir" or "ma'am" when addressing anybody higher than them on the chain of command.
