Ever been in a social situation where some Barney Fife of a guy spouts off about playing pro sports and when you get down to brass taxes you find out he was non drafted and played for the Minot,North Dakota Snow Geese of the independent short season tumbleweed league.Same goes for engagements in the newspaper where the groom is said to be playing pro ball when it's really glorified bar league ball somewhere in the boonies. The guy had to pay for his uniform.Man,it's all so embarrassing.Where are these peoples minds! Can't a family member step in the first time these claims are made and tell the guy he made a royal ass of himself?
The definition of playing pro ball should be that you are somehow under contract to be called up to play in the big leagues at any moment. There might have to be typhoid fever or the black plague to make every player in the organization sick or dead to have it come down to where you get called up to play but you still are in the chain where there is a possibility it could happen even if you suck.
Same goes for guys that said they were jockeys. When you start out asking if they road at Saratoga or Santa Anita, you get a blank stare. So you go down the chain until you are asking if it was Mountaineer Park in West Virginia or even Finger Lakes in New York until you are down to the lowest organized racing like Atakod Downs in South Sioux City,Nebraska. You finally hit a chord where the guy says,ya,one guy at the podunk county fair I rode at was so good he once road 2 races there.
Anyone ever come across a situation like this whole pro spouting off dealie where they knew the person well enough to rip him for talking that way and making a joke about him saying it?
