    Trying to watch cricket
Sri Lanka - Pakistan. I don't know who's leading. I don't know what's happening. The scoreboard at the bottom of the screen is showing "SL 75-0". That does not sound like a proper score.

    What is going on?

It is based on judge's scoring. It works a lot like Dancing With The Stars.

It's hard to give a simplified summary for a newbie but basically it is all about the twinkliness of the players' toes.

Pakistan looks very upbeat and smily... you'd think they would award points for that, but no.

P.S. Sri lanka now 85-1. The 1 is an out and they get ten outs so Pakistan have 9 outs to get.

If I had to call it now I'd say sri Lanka win.

Now you're getting into the very controversial area of scoring criteria. Some people - even at the highest levels - feel there should be more credit given for jauntiness. Traditionalists say no, it is all about story-telling as conveyed through footwork.

Again, I don't have time to explain all the basics to a newbie.

Oh man back in the motherland, I played a mean wicket keeper for St. Georges. We would whup up on Somerset every single Cup Match celebration.

Then we would all get high on a sugar cane - weed hybrid and have machete fights.

Thanks for these bits of insight anyway. I also feel that jauntiness, and to a certain extent genteel, are criminally underrated aspects in judged sports like cricket.

SL has scored 126 runs now. Pakistan is not looking as jaunty anymore. Looks like we are on the right side on both counts.

Looking at the "cricket" entry on Wikipedia and my head hurts. Just when I think I'm starting to figure it out, they throw in a gratuitous reference to Kevin Bacon's performance in Footloose (1984).

And I'm sure that your ball release is world-class. Just so you know though, Robyn does complain about your follow-through.

Holy shit, I never realized that was Chris Penn in there.

That's one guy you wanna model your follow-through on, Bread. Watch the 0:26-0:27 segment:

Do they buy the 2x4 bats in cricket at Home Depot?

Obviously what would happen if they scored that way is it would encourage excessive late-game cartwheeling and pirhouettes as a team down on the scorecard becomes desperate. Purists don't like it when one team appears to be doing a gymnastics floor routine out on the pitch. "Points whoring" they call it.

But the patience to explain all this in detail to a newbie, I do not have.
