Guess it came down to them realizing they were not going to be able to sign him to a new contract.

VERY disappointing as a NE/Boston guy.

A head scratcher. Seems like the Pats could've done better. It's basically a bottom of the first round pick, being that it's the 49ers, but they need immediate help if they're going to make another Super Bowl run.

Shocked they gave him up for a second rounder after refusing to trade him last offseason. Really shocked they did it for 2nd round pick, with so many teams needing a qb you would have thought they could get a bidding war started and drove price up to a 1st rounder.,

Yeah, I think this gives the Niners some advantage in signing him, and a tryout in advance. imagine Pats knew they couldn't pay him and would have lost him for nothing. Still weird. I would have figured him going to a good team in need of a QB starting right away.

Wouldn't say he is a star or will ever be one, but he is most likely better than 50% of the starting current QB's...

I'd guess he turns into a pretty good qb with Shanny. Agree he prob better that half the bums starting around the league.

Yep. They prioritized insurance for longer. And don't forget they traded Brissett first. Of course if Brady gets injured in the next game it won't look too good. They have a bye week and probably just couldn't wait any longer.

I wouldn't be surprised at all if the Patriots either 1. Trade up for Sam Darnold. Or 2. They may be able to keep their current first round pick with Baker Mayfield available.
