Dallas Clark gives golfers shakes hands with golfers at the start of the tournament.2nd Annual Dallas Clark Foundation golf success
Clark set to begin 7th NFL season
By Phil Monson
The second annual Dallas Clark Foundation Golf Tournament proved to be a huge success.
Held at Spring Valley Golf Course north of Livermore last Friday (June 12), a field of 138 golfers took part in what Clark hopes will become an annual fundraising venture to raise scholarships for area schools.
"It's a great turnout today. We hope to have it get bigger and better," said Clark, a Livermore native preparing for his seventh year in the National Football League.
"We're at 138 golfers. We had 32 groups. Last year we had 19 groups, so you never know what to expect that first year, but we were happy with it and people had a great time. People really enjoyed themselves last year so I think that's why we had such a good turnout this year," Clark said. "It's a great event. The most important thing is for a great cause, to give scholarships back to these local seniors in Humboldt and Kossuth Counties."
A live and silent auction and numerous lucky shot give-a-ways were part of the 18-hole day of golf for those who paid the $75 entry fee. Local golfers not only got to mingle with Clark, but special guests included Indianapolis Colts offensive linemen Ryan Diem, Ryan Lilja, Charlie Johnson and Jeff Saturday. Four other friends from Indianapolis were on hand to play golf, they include Tom Crowley, Brian Cook, Rob Schroeder and Gary Lettow.
"I have pretty much the whole Indianapolis Colts offensive line here today, along with four non-football players and good friends," Clark said.
"They are all excited to come out and see my old stomping grounds," Clark said. "A couple of them played last year and enjoyed the course."
Clark took a break from greeting visitors last Friday and shared his thoughts with the Independent on his impending seventh year in the NFL, all with the Colts.
Clark, a first-round draft choice out of the University of Iowa in 2003, has developed into one of the premier tight ends in the NFL.
"It's insane when I think about how fast my career has gone," Clark said. "The first year in the NFL felt like about seven years, then the next six just rattle off. My career has really flown by and I've enjoyed every second of it."
"I've had some good memories and some bad. That's the beauty of the game. Having fun and staying healthy is the most important thing and we've done a good job there," Clark said.
"This is another fun year coming up with a bunch of question marks that everybody is dying to find out and find out the answer. We're excited as players to get it started and see what happens," Clark said.
Clark says he feels as good as ever health-wise.
"I feel really good. This has been a great off-season. The body is feeling really great," Clark said. "Just a few minor things here and there, but for the most part, I haven't had too many injuries."
"I've been able to attack the off-season program and get into shape. I've had fun doing it," Clark said. "We had good attendance with our teammates during workouts in Indianapolis. Players showed up and got a lot of work done."
As a writer who has known Clark since his boyhood days, even after six years in the NFL, Clark remains grounded and firm to his Livermore and Humboldt County roots.
"That's what this whole golf outing is about. It's a chance for me to give back to the great community that helped me out so much through my years growing up. To be able come back today and hang out with the locals and just say thank you in person - all this has great intention and motivation behind it, but it would mean nothing without the people who come out and golf today," Clark said.
"People coming out giving their time and money for a good cause, I thank they for that. It's great to see them in a nice, relaxed environment here today," Clark said. "Not during the season with my head spinning with plays. It's nice for me to shake hands with people and see how everyone is doing."

Four members of the Indianapolis Colts’ offensive line made a trip to Iowa to play in teammate Dallas Clark’s Foundation golf outing on Friday, June 12 at the Spring Valley Golf Course. Even a rainy day and soaked clothing couldn’t keep the smiles off the faces of the players. Pictured are offensive right tackle Ryan Deim, Clark, offensive guard Ryan Lilja, all-pro center Jeff Saturday and offensive tackle Charlie Johnson.
The Dallas Clark Foundation hosted the second annual golf tournament to raise funds for the scholarships given to area students. The event was played at the Spring Valley Golf Course in Livermore on Friday, June 12 with 32 teams participating.
"It's a fun way to give back to the area," said Clark, the tight end for the Indianapolis Colts. "It's something I always wanted to do. It's taken a little time to get things set up but it's started up good. It's all done because of the great support from the communities in the area. It would be nothing without them."
"It was a very successful event," said the organizer Molly Berte. "We had a great turnout of golfers. It is a great cause to give back to the community that we live in. I am so honored to be able to work with a great person like Dallas."
The foundation gave out four, $3,000 scholarships to four area high school seniors this spring. Kelsey Kuecker of Algona High, Kyle Pedersen of Corwith-Wesley-LuVerne and Amber Streit along with Adam Thilges of Twin River Valley were the 2009 recipients. All four attended the banquet at the conclusion of the golf outing.
Seniors from the local area schools have the opportunity to apply for these scholarships. They were selected by their academic qualifications and other achievements they accomplished throughout their school years.
This year's event was won by the group of Josh Manske, Steve Mueller, Steve Ditsworth and Virgil Williams with a 15-under par 57. One of the highlights of the outing was four players from the Colts' offensive line and teammates of Clark playing in the event.
All-pro center Jeff Saturday, offensive right tackle Ryan Deim, offensive tackle Charlie Johnson and offensive guard Ryan Lilja. Each of the Indianapolis linemen commented on their day in little Livermore.
"It's been fantastic, to come back and see where Dallas is from," said the all-pro Saturday. "We went back out and saw the home where he grew up in, the street named Dallas Clark Road and all things we did were great and the golf was just a plus. The people were great and we really enjoyed helping raise money for No. 44 and the foundation.
"I think the way you guys feel about him, we also feel about him in Indy. He is a class man, a heck of a teammate and just a great guy. Dallas is one of the favorite guys in the team for everybody and someone your really enjoy being with."
"It was a pretty good looking course, said Lilja. "I didn't expect to see this in the middle of nowhere out here in the sticks. The place was very cosmopolitan. Pretty much what we expected with Dallas.
"It was good to see where he is from. Being around the people he grew up with and influenced his life. It was a treat for us to see where he began his career and it was a great time; we all had a blast."
"It is a great event for a worthy cause," said Deim. "We wanted to come out and support Dallas. It's something we try to do that as teammates.
"He's one of my favorites on the team. A great guy and everything he does for the foundation is a good deal and we're happy to help him out."
"It was great," said Johnson. "We try to come out and support other teammates in their charities. It is my first time in Iowa and I loved it. This is a nice course. We had a great time and it was for a good cause.
"Dallas means a lot to our team. He can do a lot of things for us. He can line up at tight end and block; he can line up at receiver and catch a lot of balls. He's a huge part of our team and our success."
Clark talked about his teammates coming out to support his foundation and also the fact that all four scholarship winners could make it to the banquet.
"Having them come out here means a lot to me," said Clark. "We have busy schedules especially at this time of the year where our days are winding down until camp and for those guys to give up a day to fly out to small Livermore; it really is special.
"It's great that they could come here and see the people that have affected me and helped me in a positive way and it's just great to have them around and give the people around here a chance to meet them and find out they're really neat guys. It is also really neat that all four winners could make it; they were very deserving and will all be very successful in life."
