I remember them especially in kids oriented tourist trap towns when I was growing up in the 70's.Places like Wisconsin Dells had them by the dozens. You could select speeds where they would throw heat in the 90's.All fast balls because there was no technique for them to throw breaking balls. It was mostly guys that wanted to impress their girlfriends who you would see at them. They barely provided batting helmets and there were no surveylance cameras to see if guys were crowding the plate and getting beaned.Talk about simple and strange times. Can you imagine if they had them around today like that? You would need a football helmet, body armor and you would have to sign a non liability waiver to get in the cage.Am I wrong on this?Anyone know of coin operated cages where the rules are non existent like the old days?

There are several in this area. Most of the time they are occupied by high school baseball players and Little League coaches taking their teams to get some extra swats in.

Is that what it is? I went to one in my town and when the ball came out I tried to catch it with my glove. It didn't say bat is required to hit the ball.

The batting cage thing reminds me of the movie,Throw mama from the train. They would have given mama a couple sleeping pills and put her in the cage but it would have backfired and Danny De vito would have gotten beaned and then when mama woke up from all his screaming, she would have beat him with the bat.

Yes, there is a batting cage here in Santa Barbara, called "Batty's", there is nobody ever there.
