Wow, I was way off on that:

Chuck Klein, the strong-throwing right fielder for the Philadelphia Phillies, has the Major League record for assists by an outfielder in a single season (since 1893, the beginning of “modern-day” professional baseball). In 1930, Klein was credited with 44 assists from the outfield.
