    Question about Canadian politics
just to show how out-to-lunch I am on current events:

Do we have an election coming up? Or are those ads taking pot shots at Michael Ignatieff just Conservatives with too much time on their hands showing their zany side?

Didn't we just have an election? In fact didn't we just have a few?

Please tell me you don't vote.

    No election in sight.

Agreed but kind of ironic when coming from an American.

my wife is canadian, i know all about them. And the fact nothing is done on any set schedule makes them a total joke.

The feuds between these two parties are merely political bickering - but are definitely indicative of an upcoming election (when exactly - is yet to be determined, and may not be known for many more months). The Libs want another stab at Parliament with Ignatieff at the helm, but the general public is probably weary of another looming election in Canada.

Pros to having no set schedule: You don't get an election campaign that lasts 2 years (ahem, Obama v. Hillary, Obama v. McCain)

Cons: Incumbent party has a lot of control over when an election is called and is of course used to their advantage

Yeah I just did what I suppose I should have done in the first place and checked the dates of recent federal elections:

                      28 June 2004
                      23 January 2006
                      14 October 2008

That is more than a little nuts. And now they're revving up again, looks like.

I don't hear Belinda Stronach's name much any more. For awhile she seemed like a power to be reckoned with on the national stage.

I would bang her. I'm not sure what it would be like to have a Prime Minister I would bang but I am willing to find out.

You know what it is? Bread is pissed because I compared him to Diefenbaker.

That's right, I hit him with a Diefenbaker bag !

I just can't take it any longer. You guys have taken over my life. All I think about is Canada and the group of misanthropes that I know from there via this website.

From here on out, this is the only Canadian I want to spend any time with.

Stronach is not even an MP anymore, let alone the fact she was never even the leader of a political party.

Seems a little extreme to me...

Possibly a better way for me to take out my frustrations.

I wanna vote Liberal, but I hate this guy in all the ads.
I dont like Stephen Harper either.
I'll have to vote NDP again.

Pretty predictable that the Conservatives would take this approach with their rhetoric.

I suppose the Liberals will come back comparing the Conservatives to the American far right Republi-zombies.

It just seems to me they should wait until an actual election has been called before going at it. Right now, they should be focused on governing.

This kind of random slap-fight is distasteful.

I swear, if i sat in a restaurant and the PM walked in, i woudn't even recognize him.. that's how out of touch i am with politics.

Canadian politics, whilst appearing shambolic at first glance, are in fact highly structured and present unique flexibility vis a vis scheduling of elections so as to facilitate democracy (or the appearance thereof).

                                                              There are pros and cons.

If we end up with a 2010 election, that will be 4 federal elections in about a 6 year span. Those things cost money. And that means that politicians are spending a lot of time campaigning rather than doing their jobs.

I find 4 elections in 6 years to be overboard.

Once someone wins a majority it'll go back to being an election every 4-5 years. If an election in '09 can grant someone a majority, then the politicians can indeed "do their jobs" since they won't have to worry as much about public opinion with an election threat always hanging over their heads.
