FSU sets records in 37-6 win against Ohio State
In a score that will surely attract some national debate, Florida State pounded Ohio State 37-6 to win the NCAA regional Sunday at Tallahassee's Dick Howser Stadium.
After Ohio State beat Georgia 13-6 earlier Sunday, the Buckeyes had no pitching left and were crushed in the late-afternoon heat. Under NCAA rules, there is no 10-run "mercy rule'' in place for NCAA regionals or the College World Series.
In regular-season games, at discretion of both teams, a game can be called after seven innings if a team leads by 10 or more runs. The Seminoles were the designated visiting team in Sunday's game, meaning they had to also bat in the ninth inning and they tacked on two more runs.
The game started on national cable television (ESPNU), but ESPN switched to another game in the fifth inning. It took more than four hours to complete the slugfest.
The Seminoles set a NCAA tournament record for most runs scored, along with a variety of other team and national records.
By cruising through this regional, FSU advances to the Super Regional on Friday. The Seminoles await the winner of the Arkansas-Oklahoma game. If Arkansas wins, the Razorbacks, seeded No. 2 in that regional, may travel to Tallahassee.
If Oklahoma wins, the Seminoles will head to Norman, Okla. for the Super Regional. The Sooners are one of the top eight national seeds.
The Seminoles left no doubt Sunday, scoring 20 runs in the first three innings. They pounded out 38 hits. They had position players being used in late innings to pitch and FSU coach Mike Martin played his entire bench, but the Seminoles kept hitting and scoring.
