    They tried like hell.

Russia's GRU intelligence agency targeted an American provider of election services, The Intercept says; a U.S. intelligence contractor was charged with revealing a secret report about the scheme.

According to the NSA report, Russian hackers sent emails to people who worked at a company that provides state and local election offices with voter registration systems, trying to trick them into giving up their user credentials. The Intercept reports, "At least one of the employee accounts was likely compromised, the agency concluded." The NSA report says that the Russians then used information from that account to launch a separate phishing attack targeting 122 local election officials.

The hackers apparently sent the officials emails that appeared to be from the vendor in an effort to trick the recipients to click on an attachment or link that could have introduced malware into their computers. If they had been successful, the hackers could have gained control of the infected computer. The American spy agency acknowledges it doesn't know how successful the Russian efforts were in that effort or what information or access the GRU may have gotten.

‘US may launch another strike on Syria’

An ominous warning to the Syrian government against staging a chemical weapons attack indicates that the United States could be on the verge of another military strike inside Syria

'Russia to respond to any US strike on Syria'

Russia has said it will react "in proportion" to any US military actions against Syria on the pretense of preventing a chemical attack.

"We will react with dignity, in proportion to the real situation that may take place,” said Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov on Wednesday during a press conference.

UN urges protection of 100k civilians trapped in Syria's Raqqah

The United Nations human rights chief says as many as 100,000 civilians are trapped in Syria's Raqqah province, urging all sides fighting the Daesh Takfiri terrorist group, "including international forces", to spare their lives.

"The intense bombardment of Raqqah over the past three weeks has reportedly left civilians terrified and confused about where they can seek refuge," Zeid Ra'ad al-Hussein said in a statement on Wednesday.
He warned that "up to 100,000 civilians are effectively trapped as the air and ground offensive intensifies."

US-backed Kurdish militants in Syria have been advancing toward Raqqah with heavy support from US-led airstrikes since November.

The UN rights chief said at least 173 civilians lost their lives in air and ground operations against Daesh this month in Raqqah, calling it a conservative figure.

"Civilians must not be sacrificed for the sake of rapid military victories," Zeid added.

US playing with fire in Syria: Iran official

A senior Iranian official has rejected US claims that Syria may be preparing for a chemical attack, warning that Washington is playing with fire in the Arab country.

“Undoubtedly, the US' unwise and adventurous behaviors in Syria are clear examples of playing with fire,” Secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council Ali Shamkhani said on Wednesday.

He described the US claims about Syria’s potential chemical attack as “delusional,” saying such allegations are fabricated to undermine the Syrian army’s gains against terrorists.
“Raising new delusional claims against Syria is the continuation of a US scenario to cover up the terrorist front's back-to-back failures and to counter the Syrian army’s decisive advances,” he added.
Shamkhani’s remarks came after Pentagon spokesman Capt Jeff Davis claimed on Tuesday that activity had been spotted at the Syrian army's Shayrat airfield in Homs province, which was hit by American missiles in April.

The United States needs another false flag for propaganda purposes because the Syrian military began securing territories and stabilizing its government, says a commentator.

“It is almost as if the US is sending a direct message to Wahhabi terrorists ... to manufacture another attack quickly,” John Steppling told Press TV on Wednesday.

Turkey ‘fires back’ at US-backed Kurds in Syria

The Turkish military claims it has fired back at US-backed Kurdish militia after they targeted the anti-Damascus militants it supports in Syria.

Turkey has also locked horns with the United States, which supports the Kurds against the Takfiri Daesh terror group, pressing Washington to stop its arms support for the fighters.

The United States supports the YPG in the fight against Daesh in Syria, despite repeated protests from NATO ally Turkey, which sees the Syrian Kurdish fighters as terrorists and fears their advance will inflame Kurdish militancy at home.

James Mattis, the US secretary of defense, addressed Ankara’s concerns in the area, saying Washington would take back all the weapons provided to the Kurds once Raqqah is liberated.

                      ‘Mideast should unite against aggressors’

Political commentator Mark Glenn believes that people of the Middle East should be “standing together” against foreign aggressors and their double-standard policies in dealing with regional states.

“I think the [Iranian] foreign minister’s remarks on this matter were brilliant and hundred percent true when he said that you cannot purchase credibility by buying weapons,” Glenn told Press TV on Tuesday.

Glenn was referring to remarks by Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif at a meeting of the European Council on Foreign Relations in Berlin, Germany, who criticized the circumstances under which arms sales agreements have become the benchmark for deciding which countries support terrorism and which countries don't.

Zarif made the comments in an apparent reference to the hefty arms deal Washington signed with Riyadh recently, which was followed by Saudi Arabia and several of its allied states severing their diplomatic and trade ties with Qatar and accusing the country of sponsoring terrorism.

US senator: US strikes on Syrian forces ‘completely illegal’

The US military has attacked Syrian government forces at least four times in recent months, including a missile strike in April against a Syrian airfield from which Washington said a deadly chemical weapons attack was launched. And last week, a US Navy fighter shot down a Syrian warplane.

‘ISIL a useful US tool to destabilize Middle East’

“It’s not that the United States has a favorable view of the ISIS but I think that the United States is simply trying to work both ends against the middle in the sense that they want ISIS to be a disruptive force in Syria and in other parts of the Middle East where there are governments that the United States ultimately wants to over-flow,” Preston told Press TV

US shooting down of Syrian jet 'act of war'

“Well, unfortunately the United States has gone so far as to shoot down a Syrian aircraft and this is obviously a huge act of war, this is very similar to what happened with the Turkish military air force when they shot down the Russian airliner in Syria,” Rickard, a former American intelligence linguist, told Press TV.

US launches new airstrikes on Syrian forces

The Daesh Takfiri terrorists have been repurposing US military Humvees in Iraq, turning them into improvised car bombs.

Of the thousands of the armored vehicles supplied by the US to Iraqi security forces, some 2,300 or two-thirds of them have fallen into the hands of the terror group, according to Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi.

After converting the cars into moving bombs, the Takfiri terrorists either use them against Iraqi forces or deploy them into Syria to solidify their foothold there.

The Daesh terrorist group has released several videos in the past bragging about capturing weapons and other supplies airdropped by the US military.

The State Department said last month that the US could not guarantee that the weapons it sends to militants in Syria would not end up in the hands of Daesh terrorists.

Australia has suspended its cooperation with a United States-led coalition in Syria out of apparent concern that the US’s recent downing of a Syrian fighter jet may escalate the situation in the Arab country to its disadvantage.

US claims ploy to justify new attack: Syria

Syria's Foreign Ministry says “baseless” claims that Damascus may be preparing for a chemical weapons attack are a US ploy to justify another aggression against the Arab country.

In a statement carried by Syria’s official SANA news agency, a Foreign Ministry source said Washington's allegations were not only “misleading” but also "devoid of any truth and not based on any facts."

The objective of the US accusations was to "justify a new aggression on Syria under ill-founded pretexts, similar to what happened in Shayrat Airport, and to cover the US-led international illegal coalition’s strikes,” the source added.

Russian military police to patrol de-escalation zones in Syria

                              Published time: 5 Jul, 2017 14:48 Edited time: 5 Jul, 2017 15:23

Special units of Russian military police, equipped with light arms, will be deployed to de-escalation zones in Syria to provide safety and security there, Russia’s special representative on Syria has announced.
The units will be tasked with “controlling” fulfilment of peace agreements and will not be on any “combat mission,” the special representative of the Russian president on Syria, and the head of Moscow's delegation at the Astana talks, Aleksandr Lavrentiev, told the media on Wednesday.

The military police “will be based along security lines in de-escalation zones,” the Russian official said, adding that further decisions on the presence of the Russian units in Syria are now being discussed in Astana.
“I would like to emphasize that those are non-fighting units,” Lavrentiev said. They will only have light arms for self-defense, he explained.
Moscow also suggested other CIS (Commonwealth of Independent States) should consider sending peacekeeping missions to Syria.

“At the moment the question is... which countries' military observers should be involved in the peacekeeping mission in Syria,” Lavrentiev said. “No one is questioning Russia's participation, so we've addressed all the CIA countries with the suggestion to consider sending, within reasonable limits, contingents to jointly monitor the situation.”

Russia is “not forcing anyone” to do it, Lavrentiev stressed, but would welcome others' decisions to join in.
The recent round of talks on the Syrian settlement in the capital of Kazakhstan, Astana has centered around seven new documents on de-escalation zones and other mechanisms to provide peace in the war-torn country.
The three guarantors – Russia, Turkey, and Iran – are now concentrating their efforts creating three more de-escalation zones, the head of Moscow’s delegation said.

The priority” is now on Idlib, Homs, and East Ghouta provinces, Lavrentiev said.

A fourth de-escalation zone in southern Syria has also been considered, but it needs the involvement of other countries, such as the US and Jordan, who have influence in the region.
Washington’s participation is expected in the next round of talks in late August, where there is hope for progress, fueled by a long-anticipated Putin-Trump meeting.

Airwars, a UK-based non-profit monitoring group, says at least 4,354 civilians have been killed by coalition air strikes in Iraq and Syria during the same period.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights says the 42,234 documented airstrikes in the country have resulted in a minimum estimate of some 7,000 civilians killed by the US-led coalition between 2014 and 2017.

In March, Amnesty International accused the coalition of "flagrant violation of international humanitarian law" as it failed to take precautions to prevent high death toll among civilians in the key Iraqi city of Mosul.

The United States launched a campaign of airstrikes against Daesh in August 2014 after the terrorist group overran Mosul and parts of Iraq's north and west.

The US-led coalition of 68 nations has been conducting airstrikes against what are said to be the positions of Daesh terrorists inside Syria since September 2014 without any authorization from the Damascus government or a UN mandate.

The coalition has repeatedly been accused of targeting and killing civilians. It has also been largely incapable of fulfilling its declared aim of destroying Daesh.

The US Department of Defense said in a report on Friday that a total of 603 civilian lives had been lost between August 2014 and May 2017, with nearly half of all those deaths occurring in or near the northern Iraqi city of Mosul, the last remaining stronghold of the Takfiri terrorist group in the Arab country.

The Pentagon's estimate of civilian deaths comes as independent monitors have time and again challenged such reports and revealed that the US-led military campaign has significantly inflicted more civilian casualties.

US strikes in Syria, Iraq 'devastating' civilians

Monitoring group: US coalition killed 744 civilians in Iraq, Syria in June

A UK-based monitoring group has announced that at least 744 civilians have been killed in US airstrikes in Iraq and Syria last month.

On Wednesday, Airwars, a London-based independent group of researchers and journalists, stressed that the number of concurrent airstrikes on Raqqah in Syria and Mosul in Iraq was "devastating."

The toll is subsequently higher than the 603 civilians the US military claims were killed since it began its anti-terror operations in the region in 2014.

Airwars Director Chris Woods stressed that the US’ goal of "annihilation" of Daesh terrorists is placing civilians at a high level of risk.

Airwars noted that between 529 and 744 of the civilians were killed in June, which marks a 50-percent increase from the previous month's tally.
"While it was always predicted that high civilian casualties would occur during the assaults on Raqqah and Mosul, this alone cannot explain the very high fatalities we and other monitors, NGOs and international agencies are tracking," said Woods.

Mosul’s liberation operation officially came to an end on Monday, with Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi declaring victory in the city, three years after it fell to Daesh.

Operations are also underway from various fronts to liberate Raqqah, which fell to Daesh in 2014.

Bodies of civilians lie on a street in western Raqqah on July 12, 2017, during an offensive by Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), an alliance of Kurdish and Arab fighters, to retake the city from Daesh terrorists.

The coalition has, time and again, been accused of disregard for civilian lives during the campaign.

Meanwhile, the Iraqi military has rejected as “baseless” an Amnesty International report accusing government forces of human rights violations during the months-long battle to liberate Mosul from Daesh terrorists.

On Wednesday, Iraq’s Joint Operations Command spokesman Brigadier General Yahya Rasool defended the performance of the Iraqi armed forces during the liberation operation, saying the Amnesty report does not reflect the realities on the ground in Mosul.

He said the Iraqi army used light and medium arms during the offensive in Mosul, and was careful in using heavy weaponry for fear of civilian lives.

‘Unjustified’ EU sanctions meant to cover up terrorist crimes: Syria

The picture taken on April 4 shows destruction at a hospital room in Khan Shayhun, Idlib Province, Syria, following an alleged chemical weapons attack.

Damascus has blasted the European Union (EU) for imposing new sanctions against several Syrian nationals, including scientists, over an alleged gas attack, saying the bans merely serve the terrorists and help cover up their crimes.

Syria urges UN action on militant siege of towns

Damascus has written to the United Nations, calling for an immediate action to end the plight of thousands of people holed up in the militant-besieged Shia-majority towns of Kefraya and al-Foua.

7,000 Syrian civilians trapped in an area of no more than 10 square kilometers has become a disgrace to humanity and the Western countries that have turned their back on the suffering of those civilians, most of them women and children, who lack the basic livelihood needs, including food and medicine and clean drinking water,” the ministry said.
