Losing 1st set and also struggling slightly in previous match has me concerned except for Roger federer has been able to do what he wants when needed.

Correct, this 4 set win was far easier than his previous outing. I think people in general though expect great players to sweep 3-0 too often, dropping a set isn't the worst thing in the world.

if you're laying that kind of chalk, they better dominate. I would not lay -1000 on anything that I didn't expect a straight sets win in.

If it was best of 3, I'd agree.

In best of 5 though coming out a little flat or just being outplayed a set isn't too out of the ordinary. I almost view it like an NBA team losing a quarter, or a football team scoring a TD on the first possession.
