OT - songs for wedding reception
I have been asked to do a little musical program for a wedding reception in July and am interested in any inspired suggestions for appropriate songs (for guitar and/or electric piano).

I really haven't settled on much so far. Just:

Beautiful by Gordon Lightfoot (dedication from groom to bride)
    When I'm 64, Beatles
I Love the Way You Love Me, John Michael Montgomery

I've got a couple shmaltzy love songs which I am only moderately enthusiastic about which I could plug in no problem. But I'm just wondering if anyone, as I say, has an inspired suggestion or two. (There will be no Zappa, Matt Rain.)

Why don't we get drunk and screw? by Jimmy Buffett

That was the 'first dance' song for the Queen Bee and yours truly and it's worked for us.

I'm not sure I have the guts to spring that on them. Not that the couple don't have a sense of humor but there is a little girl.

However that is just the kind of outside-the-box thinking I was hoping for.

You gotta bust out the REO Speedwagon, Mudcat. How about "I Can't Fight This Feeling"? That intro piece is very recognizable and a real piece of cake to play. It's written in Amaj which would be one of the easier key to take down a step in case you wanted to perform it on guitar.

Another one is Your Song by Elton John, which you might think is played out, but if you listen to the Live in Australia cut you get some great ideas for fresh phrasing and break-out harmonies in the chorus. I have sheet music and MP3s galore for these and others, Top 40 is my genre.

        Enjoy the performance, my friend.

Thanks for all the ideas so far. Keep 'em coming if you got 'em.

the funniest part to me was I asked the groom if they had a song they consider Our Song.

He kinda gives me a quizzical look and says, "Hmmmm . . . . yeaaahhhhhh . . . I think so. Leave it with me."

The thought of the conversation where he tries to drag that out of the bride without letting on that he has forgotten Our Song makes me chuckle.

Drawing a blank right now on the old guy credited with the song, but how about Makin' Whoopee? Also a few old Motown/R&B tunes come to mind like Rev Al Green's Love & Happiness, James Brown's I Feel Good or several from the Marvin Gaye catalog.

You bring interesting angles to the discussion, I'll give you that. And I appreciate it. I love the song Makin' Whoopee but I'm not sure I want to sing a song about a husband cheating on his wife and the general theme of how things deteriorate after the wedding.

It's like, I have a few songs that are quite good for me to perform, but I'm just not sure they fit in with the spirit of the day. Like She Thinks I Still Care. Or I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry.

Or going in another direction, I could wail on something like Southern Man but it just seems so off topic.

Maybe I'm thinking too much. Regardless there are some Motown/R & B songs that would be great.

Is this reception being held in the nursing home? How old are these people? I'm in my 30's and if you played this stuff at a reception I would jump out of the window.

kind upbeat perhaps in the beginning of reception before bride and groom are introduced

He is mid-40's. She is early 30's. It is a very casual wedding and reception at their house.
