Yet again, the chat room has become unusable with lag

Instead of saying you're looking into it, how about a commitment to fixing the problem for good? People have been running internet chat rooms for over a decade without a tenth of the troubles you guys have keeping yours functioning.

Thanks John, I really appreciate the fact that you want to see it receive a permanent fix. Sometimes I just get frustrated by all the "Well, we've got it fixed for now" replies we've gotten for months and it's gratifying to hear that it'll be examined for a permanent fix.

The chat room is busted again, but I'm sure you guys are aware of that and looking into a solution. I actually wanted to post because there's been a flaw in the chat room that's become more and more of a nuisance since it's become more popular. We now have several posters who are eitehr bilingual or whose primary language isn't English, but the chat room doesn't allow them to use non-English characters including diacritics or non-standard punctuation. I think it would be wise to resolve this sooner rather than later and allow people to converse, even if it's in their own private room, in the language they feel most comfortable in.

Also, the YouTube function really bogs down the chat and makes the memory hole in the application much worse. Could we just get rid of that altogether and share videos using the URL feature? It would be a huge improvement.

We've tracked down the lag to other aspects of mysbrforum that needed improvement. Unfortunately that "upgrade" is in development and for now there's not much we can do until the rest of the site is "upgraded".

Once the rest of the site is "upgraded", we'll consider adding the full range of characters to the chat.

As for the youtube videos, from what i can tell, it only starts buffering the video if you play it. So if you don't play the video, you shouldn't have any memory overflows. If we find that thers is a memory leak problem, we make it a simple link. I for one like playing the video right in chat and not having to go visit youtube, only cuz I usually never come back and end up watching stuff like this:

I see what you're saying Ivan, and I think many of us regulars have started just using the little YouTube link at the bottom right of the embed to open it in a new window rather than playing it in chat to avoid inflating the memory usage with the video buffer. It begs the question though, that if the purpose of a chat room is to chat, then why tie up 8 lines of "screen real estate" for a video that only a few will play?

Also when a video is added to chat it stops the natural scroll, where it fails to advance the screen for new comments made in the room. When a poster goes on a YouTube spree, that can become rather aggravating to have to manually advance the window after each video to stay current.

It looks like the character set issue is just a switch from using UTF to ASCII, should be a real quickie.

Thanks for the response though. What are these upgrades of which you speak? Anything cool that we can watch develop as you progress with it?

I like the youtube embed button. I dont think it slows up the room at all. I dont use it alot but when I do use it, its a nice feature to have.

The "upgrades" are mostly performance and core improvements. Mysbr pages loading faster and that kind of jazz.
