The world breaks everyone and afterward many are strong in the broken places. But those that will not break it kills. It kills the very good and the very gentle and the very brave impartially. If you are none of these you can be sure it will kill you too but there will be no special hurry.

"He no longer dreamed of storms, nor of women, nor of great occurrences, nor of great fish, nor fights, nor contests of strength, nor of his wife. He only dreamed of places now and of the lions on the beach. They played like young cats in the dusk and he loved them as he loved the boy."
~Ernest Hemingway, The Old Man and the Sea, pg. 25

"That's why they call it sudden death overtime. Because it's sudden and it's death."
Dunno who said it but it has a bit of a Hemingway-esque vibe, I think.

This thread makes me want to go back and reread some Hemingway as well as some old John Steinbeck. Funny how the mind works every once in a while.

Steinbeck could tell a story, couldn't he? Cannery Row or Tortilla Flat?

What a diabolical thing to ask a Steinbeck fan who is philosophically opposed to waffling on such questions. It literally caused smoke to come out my ears for a few minutes. I was not far from collapsing onto the ground in convulsions.
I have settled on Cannery Row but please be careful in the future.

And now that you mention Steinbeck, I want to watch The Grapes of Wrath again. I can never get enough of that movie.

Know what you mean, Doc might be one of my favorite literary characters ever. I'll cast a vote for Tortilla Flat just to make sure it gets its due recognition.
