    Canadians - do you believe?
The reference, if there is any doubt, is to the constant commercials for the 2010 Vancouver Olympics with the series of fresh-faced sprites declaring their support of our national team.

I suppose there are two issues. One relates to the fact that Canada is the only nation to ever host an Olympics and not win a gold medal (and we've done it twice). So DO YOU BELIEVE we will win a gold medal?

The bigger issue of course is DO YOU BELIEVE we can win the whole games?

My answer to the first is, of course. We will break the drought and win multiple gold medals. No doubt. Easiest question of the day.

However, the question of winning the games is the big one. As much as I would hate for those adorable Canadian kids to be disappointed, my answer is no, I don't believe. This is based on no special knowledge. Like most people, I don't follow Olympic sports between games. I have not assessed our biathletes versus the Norwegians or our relative strength in 2-man bobsled.

I just can't believe we would win the whole thing. There are, like 2 billion Chinese and they have gotten unsettlingly friendly and who knows what they are capable of? We're a nation of, what, 5000 people? Maybe 6000? We're going to beat every country in the world?

No, I don't know. I guess there is a built-in inferiority complex or something. But I just can't believe it.

    DO YOU BELIEVE?

I believe that it's ****ed-up for Canada to apply for the hosting of the games when Canadian athletes in general get so little support.

Apart from hockey, we're a country full of failed ****ing athaletes who need to deliver pizza between training sessions.

I should have really addressed this thread to Canadians and also Bread who has done so much for diplomatic relations.

Bread you are allowed to speak.

You know what though? It sounds like they have been getting some support for the last several years. I mean, I'm not sure our moguls skiers and short-track speed skaters have an army of rabid Canadians following them around the globe and painting their chests and whatnot - but the government has been supporting them to gear up for this.

My brother knows a hundred times more about this stuff than me - like he can actually talk coherently about the strength of our ski teams and lugers and all different stuff - and he says we really do have a chance to win it all.

          In fact he outright believes.

One of our top athletes, Alexandre Despatie, is basically living off of a McDonalds sponsorship. He's an "ambassador" for them - it's right on his website's home page:

We didn't win a gold medal in '88? Unreal.

We're surely the big favorites to win gold in both men's and women's hockey, and odds are, some skier/curler/figure skater/etc will get lucky.

WIN the games? LOL are you kidding?

Canadians are always proud of their mediocrity, think that if they place in the top 20 that they're a success. Especially if they get a participation ribbon.

As far as I know, we have no skier with a chance (except maybe some b.s. skiing like cross-country + target shooting), we haven't had a bobsled guy since Lueders, figure skating died with Browning/Stojko.

Only hope is hockey and curling.

All they ever wanted was to put some healthy bets on the home team and then arb against asian markets without their parents finding out.

                                    But nooooo.

I am looking forward to these Olympics in a very large way.

Most of the troglodytes here probably don't even realize that the biggest sporting event this past weekend was the beginning of the trials for Canada's curling team. Who will defend the gold won by Gushue in Turin?

                                        Who?
