A number of China’s top bitcoin exchanges are preparing to suspend their services following instructions from the government.

BTC China, one of the country’s top three, became the first to officially make the move after it announced today that will stop all trading for China-based customers from September 30.

The company said other services, including its BTCC Pool for miners, are not impacted and will continue to run. There’s no word on when, or indeed whether, it will reintroduce trading.

If China's forcing its largest, most profitable exchange to close, it's hard for me to imagine it intends to let ANY exchanges remain open, but that's just a guess.

As for whether China eases up at some point after this crackdown, I don't even have a guess. They seem to do everything in secret over there, so I'm not even sure where to look for clues.

even though i'm holding a little bitcoin... i don't care too much if it's at $100 or $1000 or $10,000... as long as it still exists! it's been fantastic for moving money to/from sportsbooks.

i used to have to pay $70 or so in bank fees for every international check, and trying to deposit significant amounts into books was really tough
