You could drown with 10 foot surge. That's why you have to evacuate if you live within a mile of the beach. And flying debris can kill you. This will be the most expensive hurricane to ever hit the US. West Palm Beach is the most expensive real estate in the country.

Whenever I see posts like this, I immediately know that the poster...
      1) Has never been in a Cat 4/5 hurricane before
      2) Has never been in any type of weather event before
      3) Knows no one personally that were killed in a weather event
      4) Has no wife or kids
      5) Has never worked as a first responder
      6) Is most likely a teenager living in his mothers basement

Anybody telling you to not worry about your own life vs Mother's nature doesn't give a shit about you and your own life.

I hire people for disaster relief efforts. Try spending months as a case worker listening to people tell you their horrifying stories and you would have a much different view on these things. Talk to someone who watched their kids get swept away to their deaths, or people who had to rip the roofs open on their house to prevent drowning or a man who saw a tree fall on his 8 year old son. In hundreds of these cases NONE of them ever could imagine they would be in harms way. ALL of them would have happily just drove 20 - 30 miles down the road to safer pastures if given the chance again.

The reason why they are warning people ad nauseum is because there's always the people like you that won't take it serious.

then the people who can afford to live there can afford to repair the damage. they've all got in excess of 2-3 million on average on hand. difficult to feel bad for rich people who preyed on poor people to get that way.

Yes, because anyone who has a lot of money preyed on poor people. GTFO, go complain to others that your life is shit and pretend like you had nothing to do to make it such.

I own a 45 unit building in Desoto County. Damn straight this is serious stuff from not only life, but business point of view. Aside from that life is good in Cape Coral.

You hire people? What does it pay? Lodging, food? Who is paying?

Always wanted to help, thought it was voluntary. Disasters aren't normally close for me to help.

been in a few hurricanes probably no 4's or 5's. been in a tornado far worse than this over-hyped event. don't know anyone killed in one of these. no wife, no kids, no mother or basement dweller. certainly wouldn't want to be a first responder to anything. not saying it isn't bad for some, but you will find that this one will only inflict minor damage. trending out to sea.

Comparing a hurricane to a tornado is like comparing a house fire to a forest fire. Very different.

not all but most rich people got rich off the poor. just rooting for all the contractors who will make some money off this repairing all those rich people's property. the rich will never miss the money that they were never going to spend anyway.

very true. certainly a hurricane covers more territory, but hardly compares to the damage inflicted by a tornado. miami got off with 44 mph winds and 2" of rain. i hope no one in that county took it seriously at least. but i'm sure they did react like they always do when some tv forecaster (who is ordered to over-hype) tells them that they are in for it.

andrew wasn't a joke but hit a largely unpopulated area. no comparison with this wind and rainstorm to that one. the only thing you will hear about tomorrow is a few flooded basements and power outages which really annoy everyone.

I think you should drive down to Florida and put a tent up right on the beach where the hurricane makes landfall and prove them all wrong.

i think that anyone who lives in or moves to the east coast of florida must know that these things happen almost every year to some extent. people that are afraid of a few feet of harmless snow and don't like it when it is cold out move there to sweat in the summer and get rained on every afternoon and face hurricane threats every fall in exchange for what. get to lay on a free beach all day for most of the time and fend off alligators in their yard when they get home if a sinkhole didn't swallow it. did i mention the snakes.

Boards ratting on windows sounds are some of the scarious I ever heard sounds like a war going o going be scared to go outside in morning and see damage so far my upper windows have held . I did see my inner front door a actually bend most amazing thing I have seen. I also know it moved my grill which is close to 125 poinds in locked wheels move 15 feet acrosss patio. The power is intense

80 mph wind you have about 20 lbs per square foot of pressure on your walls. Your door has about 500 lbs of force on it from the wind pressure.

                                          Stay safe!

It's too late to leave now. Folks have to hunker down and bear it.

I just got bad news that Nassau island is in terrible shape. A friend of mine's moms house roof flew off, water came in and totally collapsed. Houses totally destroyed all over the island, cars underwater. Trees down everywhere. The airport is totally under water. So far, they're not hearing of any deaths but many houses leveled to the ground.

Okay folks - it looks like this storm is breaking up. The system is not very organized and too far east to impact the coastline. It should be a cat 1 by the time it hit the Carolina's and the loop back should not be an issue. Worst case isolate tropical storms but we dodged a bullet here.

The only problem with events like this is that people become very complacent the next time because they think the media is exaggerating. This storm was a monster in the Caribbean, it devastated a lot of areas but people here will only remember how millions were told to evacuate and nothing happened. The same thing happened in Texas and LA. Several false alarms so people got lax and hunkered down when they really should have left.

Know I lost my gutter I heard it come off and bounce on my patio. Also had 100 point glass table outside that I laid upside down and its slide across my patio but so far rest of house has SUBstained my neighbhors had 2 royal palms that have to be 120 feet high and they are bending could be disastrous for them if they fall

These storms are enourmous (don't need to even be cat 1) get on the edge of them and it's still intense. Only takes one blocked stormwater drain to flood a street no problem, whether that's terrible devastation or not maybe not but will be for some.
