I would like to be able to think for myself and make picks for the upcoming football season. I know the rules of the game but little else. What would be a solid first step in learning how to think about the matchups and making solid decisions?

Read weighing the odds by king Yao, and sharp sports betting by Stanford Wong. They won't guarantee you win, but they are a few good first steps.

5 easy steps for you son

        1) Go back to grammar school and learn how to write
        2) Hopefully while doing #1 you also figured out how to read
        3) Pick up a sports betting book
        4) Open the chapter on why you can't win
        5) Find a better way to waste your time and money

Thank you for the bluntness. If english is not my first langauge do I get a pass on point #1?

For the person who suggested the books...thank you. I look forward to reading them. I realize its a losing proposition. Thanks again for all your input

Don't get discouraged. Realize it's a lot of work if you want to win-long term... but getting to that point (and the learning on the way) is actually more fun than making the money.
