For those who remember Jesse Barfield.....
Quite unexpectedly, ol' Jesse was in attendance at my son's baseball game today and threw out the first pitch. A name from the past (And former homerun king) that some might recall. The rock on his finger he was awarded for winning the longball crown is ridiculous, freakishly sized to be honest.

Anyway, like I stated, he threw out the first pitch and I was half expecting him to obliterate the poor 8 year old catcher with one of his patented missile deliveries from right field.....

Wow.....That's going way back, Plom. Well done. With all due respect to Jesse, he's got a lot less hair and a whole lot more under the Blue Jay logo, but we all do I imagine.

Way back in the day I was going out with a French Girl who knew nothing about baseball except Jesse had a nice ass. She watched him play at the old Ex stadium while I watched the game.

She likely fantasized she was banging Jesse as you went about your business with her in the sack.

Barfield's period as a fixture for the Jays was entirely contained within my period as a fixture as a fan (which is my convoluted way of saying I remember him very well).

Guy could hit - no question. Early in his career it seemed like he might be a .300/45/120 type of hitter but it never quite worked out that way. But he provided some thrills.

His arm was a jaw-dropper. It was like, did I really just see that?

My strongest Jessie Barfield memory is in a different direction though. My mom was a member of the Blue Jays fan club back then and she knitted a sweater for his son Josh, and she presented it to Jessie who accepted it very graciously. It had Blue Jays logos and Joshua's name on it. I clearly remember it. It was a tiny thing for a little kid.

Next thing I know, I'm hearing that Josh Barfield has made the big leagues. It was one of those, time-goes-too-fast-and-I'm-getting-old moments for me.

If that's what it took for it to work for her that's fine with me.... with her French accent she coulda been saying Jessie and thought she was calling Joey.... who knows

Real nice guy as well. Stuck around after the game and signed autographs for all the kids. Chatted with the adults as well. Apparently he's been involved in the Ajax baseball scene for some time, seeing as his nephew was on the team. He was apparently quite a nice chap during his playing days as well, so it seems he's pleasantly unchanged in that regard...I was hoping he'd take a few hacks at the pitching machine, but as Jesse stated in confucius-like tone: "This day is all about the kids...."

Barfield was the man. I have always been a Jays fan. But I liked these guys a little better.

Exactly. Brings back those memories of caring.

Bell-Moseby-Barfield. The platoons at third and catcher. Damaso Garcia. Stieb-Clancy-Leal. Willie Upshaw. All those guys who lifted the Blue Jays to the next level.

It's too bad they weren't there for the trip to the final level. Oh, what might have been if they could have finished off the Royals in the 1985 ALCS after taking a 3-1 lead.

Yeah, the early to mid 80's I was buying cards and going to card shows at a frantic pace. My dad had lot of cards form the 60's that I sold as a kid to my shop teacher to supplement my gambling habit. I am talking Maris, Yaz rookie card, stuff like that. Let's just say I wish I had those cards back. I did come across a Jackie Robinson rookie card at my dads house last month. It is in Good condition, but as tempted as I was to ask him for it, I didn't. God knows that thing will sit in his closet for another 5 decades.
