Not dead yet, but this is a rough stretch coming up for the Astros. 13 games in a row against first place teams. If they can manage to come away .500 or above during this stretch then they have a shot at the post season. Astros final 16 games are against AL West teams and the Astros are a combined 29-12 this season against A's, Angels, and M's.

Yeah, they're only one back, but these next 13 games are going to be brutal. It's going to take a miracle to not get buried in that time. General rule of thumb about surprising hot starts from baseball teams (usually the talk will start 10-20 games in) is to give it 50 games or so before any postseason talk. Astros passing that hurdle with flying colors. Key injuries (obviously can happen to any team) pose a bigger danger than not being good enough. They're legit.

The Astros' already depleted rotation will now be without its ace for an undetermined period of time.

Dallas Keuchel was placed on the 10-day disabled list Thursday with what the Astros described as neck discomfort, a recurrence of the injury that cost him a start last month. Baseball's ERA leader was sent back to Houston for further evaluation. General manager Jeff Luhnow said the team doesn't have a timetable for his return.

Keuchel (9-0, 1.67) was a late scratch from his scheduled start Wednesday against the Kansas City Royals and the Astros listed an undisclosed illness as the reason. He wasn't available to comment to reporters postgame Wednesday or on Thursday.

Astros manager A.J. Hinch said after Wednesday's game Keuchel had been sick in recent days and also that the pitcher didn't look or feel right during his pregame warmups. Hinch said in his pregame media session Thursday he had yet to speak to Keuchel since the pitcher's doctor's visit in Houston, so he wasn't yet sure of a specific treatment plan.

"We need to get him right before he gets back on the mound. We hope it's soon. If it's one start, great. If it's more than one start, than it is what it is and we'll have to adapt," Hinch said.
