I had sciatca a few years ago was squating had a,spotter when I went down and tried to go back up bam felt a sharp pain in,my lower back it hurt when I would put my right foot down. I went to a chiropractor he did some adjustments to realign things. It worked I would suggest seeing a chiropractor...

Hey Cooch,
Thanks for the advice. I was doing deadlifts generally every week, twice some weeks. I squat 4 x's per week. I just had ONE bad rep, it was terrible form as I was pretty fatigued. I should've dumped it but I pushed up anyways. Once I heal, depending on the severity of the injury and the damage done, I'll be back to squats and DL's one day.
DL's are my fav workout, I generally go heavy though. It's a grind, man vs. gravity. I love em

Listen to a trusted professional. But don't panic and be Dr. Google because it usually ends up with you linking this to cancer or something....like everything else out there.
I'll be back at it one day, but this will set me back a few months and I'll end up starting over from scratch. I think once I feel better, I'm gonna do exactly what you're doing, focus on cardio and light weights, plus yoga this time. I've neglected my core and have really tight muscles which probably led to this injury. Thanks for the input!

Jake, tell me more about this.
I still have severe pain and weakness. I've gotta get an MRI and injection.
So I call and ask to speak to the UM sup? What is UM? Do I just tell them what happened, and what has already been tried and that it hasn't worked and I need pre-approval? How does this work because I'm at the point I've gotta get this done
Thx

Kraken sorry I didn't answer your question - I missed that post until just now. UM is Utilization Management - they approve things that need prior auth(like MRI's) at health plans. It sounds like you got it approved, but if you have any questions just PM me. Good luck with your back AIDS

I'm only light duty at work right now for a herniated disc. Was out 5 months then worked two before it flared up again. Anti- inflammatory drugs and doing exercises to strengthen your core is the only way I get relief. You need to stand straight and lean backwards with your hands on your hips, it slowly pushes disc back in places. Any physical therapy place worth its salt can give you the exercises, do them diligently and it works wonders. At least for me.
Hope you feel better Kraken!

Oh boy, hope you feel better soon, follow through with the therapy and be cautious. Don't push too hard once you start feeling better, come back slowly and strengthen your core to help with support.
Good Luck Krak.

Yes, I have herniated L5 and still play sports at high level.
Do not take Motrin, do not take anti-inflammatory drugs because you're doing more long term damage.
1. Klemopixx is right with strengthening your core.
2. Lay down straight shoulders flat and swing your right leg high up towards your left shoulder. HOld your knee down.
3. Hang on a pull up bar several times a day and feel your spine stretch. Just hang. Bring the pressure to your lower back. YOu're going to feel some pain at first and it might be difficult to hang there. The more you do it the more your discs will align.
4. Get in a push up stance (but keep your legs on the ground) and bring your dick down to the floor and straighten your back as much as possible. Almost like a fukking position.
All these types of excercises will help. The surgeon that saw me said I"ll never play basketball at the same level again. Proved him wrong. Got even better past 2 years.
5. Consider an epidural shot. Not sure if your insurance will cover. It's a crazy shot injected directly into your back....they use a machine to find the nerve....forgot the name of the machine....but it's expensive...you will get relief for 3 weeks. As in completely back to normal...

Do not let any surgeon touch your back. Bro....trust me on this one. Several people in my fam have gotten that same surgery done for that lower disc and it's weakened them years later.
If you do the rehab consistently I guarantee you will get back to normal. I have the same exact disc L5-S1. Surgeon said I'll never be the same athlete again. Don't listen to them. Body will always find ways to heal itself if you give it the tools to do so. PT is that tool. Take natural anti inflammatories. Look into supplements.

Goater I don't wanna get the surgery
Problem is I still have weakness in my left foot indicating that there is still compression on the nerve root
Leaving pressure on the nerve root can lead to long term problems with the affected leg and foot

the exercises i gave you along with the core exercise are designed for to relieve that pressure on the nerve. i used to have the same issue. flairs up every now and then after intense sports but with the proper exercises it's pretty much gone. don't be lazy. get the epidural shot if insurance covers

Have someone tie you up and stretch that shit like in Batman. Fukk chiropracters and eastern medicine...shit is a scam. Forget modern medicine, let's jist crack some shit around and put some fukkin' cups that will leave hickeys on your back. What next, leeches and blood letting??? Quit squatting 280lbs. If you can't do it with proper form, it's too much weight. You ain't makin' the fukkin' crossfit games.

Light weights only! More cardio and healthier food if you are over 30 y.o. Easy on work outs too: I just got disgusting shingles, and this is because my immune system was lower than usual due to the "getting ready for the summer" heavy cardio and diet. How stupid is that. Only one more week of pain for me, though, - your situation is way worse.

This is actually right on. It could be all in my head... but when I didn't workout... and didn't take in a lot of protein... my back hurt a lot. Go figure.
So... when you have back issues... you must focus more on your diet....
It sucks... but it's the truth.

I'm in pain and can't sleep at night, and I walk back and forth from my bedroom to my leaving room all night long. And penguins are there. Lots of them, more than usual. They laugh at me and they are all gay, and some of them wear ski masks. What disgusting animals, why can't they just leave me alone once and forever.

Some of that Eastern medicine has been around for thousands of years, not the couple of hundred of Western medicine. And it didn't grow under the modern corporate motivations.
I've experienced some very effective Traditional Chinese Medicine, along with wacky eastern herbs, made by nature, not in a factory.
Honestly, after some acupuncture sessions for pain and relaxation, I'm surprised they let me drive home.

I know what you are going through and it's a bitch!! Goat is right don't let any Dr. operate unless a last option.Get the swelling down and take it easy...in some way or other this will always be with you. As for pain meds, see if Dr. will give you some form of Fentanyl (only if u r opiate tolerance ) it is 1,000 x stronger than oxys and come in mics instead of **.................................best of luck.

No sciatica pain here. Kraken I would check it with a doctor if I was you. Sport gamblers are prone to misidentifying the symptoms due to the lack of medical degree or medical experience.
Would you ask a doctor for a pick? No.

Exactly. Government needs to do something about it asap until it's too late. There are EVERYWHERE these days: they shop in our supermarkets, they drive our cars, they even have their own beer now! What's next? I'll tell you what's next: the President of the United States. Yes, in this order: black, women, penguin.
