They're not booing the U.S. national anthem - they're booing a symbol of the opposing team. The U.S. national anthem is linked to the opposing team, so when the singer hits the first few notes, the crowd wants to tell the Bruins that they're not on their side.

You can compare that to a boxer who always uses the same ring entrance song. When he goes to fight in a hostile territory, people will boo as soon as his song starts. They don't have anything against the song or what it represents, they just hate the ****ing guy.

Consider also the fact that the average hardcore French Canadian fan never hears the U.S. national anthem outside of a hockey rink. Maybe during the Olympics, but otherwise, national anthems are considered pre-hockey-game songs, more or less.

It doesn't really excuse the act - it's still classless, but the intention is not what it might seem at first glance.

I'm thinking the same thing, it will be interesting to watch the classless piece of shit montreal fans respond to getting beat by the Bruins, it likely starts by booing the American anthem, montreal fans are sore losers - which isn't a surprise, Quebecers tend to shed tears as soon as something doesn't go their way, I think they teach it in Quebec schools..
