I like that. It makes more sense to categorize by decade. I also nominate Sonic Youth for the 80's. Huge fan here - most memorable live show I've ever seen.

      60's - CCR (alright, late 60's)
      70's - Frank Zappa
      80's - Sonic Youth
      90's - Nirvana
      00's - ??

But that's what I come up with for this topic.

Cracker, interesting. Isn't that the band that did "low" I think it was and Eurotrash girl. If that's them I like the band, didn't know they could be considered that strong though.....cool

That's them. The funny thing as it pertains to this topic is I listened to Cracker for years assuming they were British. But I was finally corrected.

Anyway, I wouldn't expect a lot of people to join me in naming them Best American rock band. Although I like them a lot, I have a hard time believing they're actually my final answer here.

But to my taste, the pickins are slim.

Flyers, I'm a fan of AIC too, but I think they're minor-leaguers in terms of the impact they had on the 90's rock landscape (compared to Nirvana). Unique sound and excellent musicianship though.

i sappose so, im just not into bands that get alot of publicity, they seem to get lazy with the music and fall apart

i dont have much room to talk for the 80's but what bout Metallica?
actually they could even be thrown into the 90's mix

Metallica has had all kinds of publicity , and has fallen apart many times, but still come back.

now whether they are still as good as in the late 80's and early 90's is up for debate.

but they could diffidently be considered sell-outs for all the soundtrack songs and fighting with napster and huge sponsorship deals and just generally taking every chance to on a stage without playing.

now i say sell-outs cause some would, i don't, I consider any band who markets themselves good and makes money to be doing what they wanted to do.
I've never bought into why some people get mad for bands having success.
I'm pretty sure almost everyone who is in a band hopes they get discovered and/or get a record deal and get radio play and start making money.

yeah that was pure bullshit. So anti what rock n roll was supposed to be all about, and what one would think the spirit of their music was about.
However based on their first few albums I wouldn't argue with them being considered the #1 American rock band, certainly tops in the genre.
