A supermarket manager in Alameda had been charged with the murders of two friends with whom he apparently had gambling debts. Police say 20-year-old Andrew Wong, an assistant night manager at Safeway, fatally shot the two men less than a year apart.
Prosecutors charged him Monday with two counts of murder with special circumstances of multiple homicides, killing during a burglary and killing during a robbery.
Police say Wong killed 52-year-old David Wells, a bakery deliveryman, in a parking lot on July 31, then killed 36-year-old Quang Quach, a Safeway co-worker, on April 3 at the victim's house.
Investigators believe Wong owed Quach $5,000 from sporting event bets; it's unclear how much he owed Wells.
Wong has been held in an Alameda County jail since his arrest Thursday night.
