Scherzer is NOT Great, he hasn't done a damn thing as a starter, Carpenter is the real deal as we all know.

That said, 9 seems EXTREMELY high here Dave, good catch.

Carpenter is 100% the real deal... I didn't pick the DBacks, did I?

Scherzer hasn't done a damn thing as a starter, but he hasn't been given much of a chance, either. He was disgustingly good throughout his minor league career, and last year in the bigs:

      56 IP, 3.05 ERA, 1.23 WHIP, 66 Ks

      As a starter:

      7 starts: 37 IP, 3.41 ERA, 1.37 WHIP, 48 Ks

      That tidies up to

      6 starts: 33 IP, 2.45 ERA, 1.24 WHIP, 43 Ks

If you throw out his 1st career start against Philly.

This kid is going to be veeeeeery good.

There is another factor in the Minnesota OF situation, that being Gardenhire is also having to choose between Young and Gomez, and the others, based on defense. Young at times looked very ragged playing left last year and has really not played much center in his career. Gomez on the other hand is very adept in center, with Cuddyer settled into right and Span capable of either of the corner slots.

Good point Willie; but can you rationalize Gomez's terrible bat?

Depends on lineup. I think they got by with it last year because you also had Mauer in the lineup. The spring numbers for Young and Gomez were basically a wash, and you're looking at a guy in Young who has had basically an extra season of MLB experience to prove himself over Gomez. It's also a front office thing with the team dealing a guy like Santana for Gomez (and others) and wanting to prove that trade a good one.

It's not like Young has some .350-.380 on-base mark either. I think if it was that big of a difference instead of the 30 points or so between him and Gomez, then the club would be more inclined to make some defensive sacrifices.

Remember that Young was involved in the Garza deal though; not = to Santana, but certainly worth noting as good as he's been looking.

But you can't let that affect your decision making. What's done is done; you need to put the players out there TODAY that give you the best chance to win. I think Delmon is the right choice, with Gomez subbed in late as a defensive replacement or pinch runner.

No right or wrong answer though. I'm just enjoying this Carpenter/Scherzer game

Wow... 7 runs scored into the bottom of the 8th... 2 outs, runner on 1st, Kinney up 0-2 on Upton, 3 straight balls and then hits him. Conor Jackson pinch hit home run.

Wish they'd have just blown it an hour and a half ago so I could have stopped watching back then .
