As far as I know the US stopped selling Japan rubber, metal & oil that was keeping the war in China going. So Japan was moving south to get the resources it needed to continue the war. They attack Pearl Harbor to keep the US Navy from stopping this move. Is this is what you mean by provoked. Did the US know & did FDR let the attack happen to get the US in the war. I don't know. But does it really matter, the US had to enter the war sooner or later. Maybe Japan did the world a favor.

Japan was seen as arrogant for trying to freeze the U.S. out of markets and someone who could be easily defeated so the U.S. starting deploying ships into Japanese waters, froze assets and put further sanctions on them. By that time the U.S. had already deciphered Japanese codes and knew what was going to happen. Ive read something of the sort more than once unlike the Gulf of Tonkin where things used to vary, but thats been declassified so I guess that version is correct.

I don't disagree the US is imperialistic. But at the time it was also not the super power it is today. Japan was raping & murdering Asia, aligned with the Nazi's & a threat to Russia as well. Something had to be done, & US had to get in the war anyway.

Yes the red scare was bull shit. It was also used against the New Deal alliance of the communist party, socialist party, & labor movement in the US at the time. Like I said they started to dismantle the New Deal as soon as it was in place.
