Just heard breaking news on ESPN that Nick Adenhart passed away in a fatal car accident last night. He just made his season debut for the Angels last night by throwing 6 shut out innings.

Poor sod, he had a good game last night.
Hopefully Data will pop along with some advice on how he could have avoided this incident.

Just hearing this, what a sad story. This on top of the story that a fan in a fight at the Angels' stadium in their season opener on Monday has also died. Hope they hang this hit-&-run driver with the max penalty allowed.

Wednesday night, Adenhart had pitched six scoreless innings, giving up seven hits, striking out five and walking three in just his fourth major league start.

Angels Pitcher Among 3 Killed in Fullerton Hit-Run
Updated 8:46 AM PDT, Thu, Apr 9, 2009
Nick Adenhart of the Los Angeles Angels, another man and a woman were all killed, and another man was critically injured, in a three-vehicle crash blamed on a motorist who ran a red light in Fullerton, Calif. just after midnight Thursday.
Los Angeles -- Angels rookie pitcher Nick Adenhart, 22, was among three people killed in a crash at a Fullerton intersection early Thursday.
Adenhart, another man and a woman were all killed, and another man was critically injured, in a three-vehicle crash blamed on a motorist who ran a red light at a Fullerton intersection, police said. Besides Adenhart, one of the other people who was also killed was also part of the Angels organization.
Authorities withheld the names of the dead for hours, pending family notification.
Adenhart was born in Silver Spring, Maryland on Aug.24, 1986.
"The right-handed pitcher graduated from Williamsport High School in Maryland and made his major league debut on May 1, 2008," TMZ reported.
Police said the driver of a minivan who was blamed for the crash fled the scene on foot but was arrested a short time later on suspicion of hit-and-run. A passenger who remained in the minivan suffered minor injuries, Brower said.
The crash occurred at East Orangethorpe Avenue and South Lemon Street around 12:20 a.m., said Fullerton police Lt. Doug Cave.
Cave said two of the vehicles -- one traveling on Lemon, the other on Orangethorpe -- crashed in the intersection. A third vehicle, which was stopped in the intersection, was struck in the accident but sustained only minor damage and its driver was not hurt, Cave said.
Witnesses said a minivan ran a red light and collided with a silver Mitsubishi occupied by four people, said Fullerton police Lt. Craig Brower.
The Mitsubishi slammed into a light pole. A man and a woman in the Mitsubishi died at the scene, Brower said.
Two other men in the Mitsubishi were transported in critical condition to UC Irvine Medical Center, where one man died, he said.
Traffic was routed around the area, and the intersection remained closed after daybreak, Brower said.

Maybe he was making the league minimum and had a good head on his shoulders and relized his stay in the majors could be short so he was more interested in his future then looking like a big shot

I checked mlb.com and the Angels site immediately, only read about Adenhart's bullpen losing him the game, hoped it was a tasteless reference to that

Shame. No one walked away from that car alive that is just horrible. Usually in packed cars like that there is one survivor. Atleast they apprehended the driver who hit them.

Angels rookie Adenhart killed in hit-and-run crash
By GILLIAN FLACCUS, Associated Press Writer 16 minutes ago
ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP)—Los Angeles Angels rookie pitcher Nick Adenhart and two other people were killed Thursday when a minivan ran a red light and struck their sports car.
Adenhart, 22, died after undergoing surgery, University of California, Irvine Medical Center spokesman John Murray said.
A fourth person remained hospitalized in critical condition.
The Angels confirmed Adenhart’s death in a statement and said no other members of the Angels organization were involved in the accident.
“The Angels family has suffered a tremendous loss today. We are deeply saddened and shocked by this tragic loss. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Nick’s family, friends’ loved ones and fans,” general manager Tony Reagins said.
The team said Adenhart was survived by his parents, Jim and Janet.
“He lived his dream and was blessed to be part of an organization comprised of such warm, caring, and compassionate people,” the family said in a statement issued through the team.
“The Angels were his extended family. Thanks to all of Nick’s loyal supporters and fans throughout his career. He will always be in everyone’s hearts forever.”
Adenhart, of Silver Spring, Md., was the Angels’ No. 3 starter. He threw six scoreless innings in Wednesday night’s loss to Oakland in his fourth major-league start and first of the season.
Adenhart and three other people were in a silver Mitsubishi that was struck shortly before 12:30 a.m. by a minivan that ran a red light and also hit another vehicle, police said.
The sports car struck a light pole, killing three people inside.
Police Lt. Craig Brower said the minivan driver fled the crash scene and was captured a short time later. The driver was arrested and booked for investigation of felony hit-and-run.
Adenhart, a right-hander, earned a spot in the starting rotation on an injury-plagued Angels staff by impressing manager Mike Scioscia late in spring training.
The pitcher made his major league debut May 1 of last year, also against Oakland. He made two other starts, getting his only decision in a victory over the Chicago White Sox on May 12. He was 37-28 in the minor leagues from 2005-08, including 9-13 last year at Triple-A Salt Lake.
The Minnesota Twins held moment of silence before their game against the Seattle Mariners. Also, there was to be a moment of silence before the start of the Texas Rangers’ home game against the Cleveland Indians.

What a horribly sad story. His family and friends came out to LA from Maryland to see him pitch yesterday and now they've come out for his last rites. What a tough situation for his family. I feel awful all of them.
I wouldn't doubt it was an illegal immigrant but it could be anybody. I use to live their and some of the worst drivers in the world are in the LA area. Folks drive around with road rage and can't wait to plow in to somebody. You have to be on the defense when driving in any city these days.

According to Fullerton officer Laura Markoski, the mini-van passenger, Raymond Alexander Rivera, is being held on identity theft suspicion and possible immigration violations. No word on if the driver is being held on any charges other than those related to the accident.
