Interesting read...Thought I would share.
Men, if you think a little dab of cologne will save you from body odor embarrassment, think again. New research from the Monell Center finds that when women are doing the smelling, it's more difficult to mask underarm odor.
In the study, published online in Flavour and Fragrance Journal, women and men rated the strength of underarm odors. Participants conducted two different sniff tests; au natural, and with colognes and perfumes.
Women and men were equals when it came to sniffing out body odor when no fragrance was used to mask the smell. When fragrance was introduced, women weren't easily fooled. Only two of 32 scents successfully blocked underarm odor. Men, on the other hand, were more easily duped. Nineteen fragrances significantly reduced the strength of underarm odor for men.
“Taken together, our studies indicate that human sweat conveys information that is of particular importance to females. This may explain why it is so difficult to block women's perception of sweat odors," said study lead author Charles J. Wysocki, Ph.D., a behavioral neuroscientist at Monell.
But men shouldn't lose hope where smell is concerned. In previous studies, researchers found that women were drawn to specific odors in sweat. It's theorized a woman's keen sense of smell might actually play a role in attraction.
