he is a head case...tons of talent...

as soon as he finally got a decent amount of money in his contract.... he sucked, no longer had a chip on his shoulder and wasn't out to "prove everyone wrong".... extreme competitor that hates to lose.. so I got to think that he used the embarrassing loses of last year to motivate himself in the off season

he did a bit better at the end of last season so I expect a performance closer to 07 then 08...

Now that you say that I do remember him ending the season strong.

              cardinals own him though......

but I think his era will be 3.85-4.5 range... he will be pitching inside this year, that was a big problem pirate pitchers had last year, they never would throw inside... so hitters were teeing off on them feeling very comfortable at the plate... new pitching coach joe kerrigan is trying to change that...

snell pitched way too many innings in 2007, so I think he had a bit of dead arm in 2008... if he is healthy his slider is unreal

                      cards or no play.....

the meat of the order absolutely owns snell lifetime...

Pujols could outscore the pirates on his own today very easily... 14-33 lifetime vs snell with 4 homers and only 3 SO's... he see's big grapefruits when he faces snell.

schu is 10-22 and glaus is 7-13 against snell, so I think they have a big edge...

Lohse is very good lifetime vs the pirates starting line up...

I can't see pittsburgh winning 2 straight in St. Louis to start the season...

Maybe I'm wrong but I thought Snell did decent against the Cards last year.

                        I took the OVER.

Good value on Snell, who had a bad and unlucky year last year. Lohse is due for some regression.

Exactly! He had a career year last year, he is not a power pitcher and he looked just awful in spring training.

                                  I don't think Lohse's spring was a mirage.

spring training for pitchers is not a good way to cap LT...

many pitchers don't even use all their pitchers for the majority of the spring, and experiment with new pitches (change-ups, breaking stuff) that they developed in the off season, to see how it works in game action....

pitchers/catchers/coaches don't go over any "books" on where and how to pitch certain hitters... giving alot of the AAA and AA players advantages.....

but hey i'm sure you watched his "stuff" in person and have a real good read on how he was throwing...

Oh I know, I almost never look at spring training numbers. In this case though, I had my suspicions before this season even started that Lohse was a fluke last year, and his spring did nothing to change my mind.

Lohse, being a groundball pitcher, isn't helped by the loss of Izturis and Glaus defensively.

Snell had a .338 BABIP last year. The average pitcher will be around .300. .338 is very unlucky (for reference, he had a .295 BABIP in 07 when he posted a 3.76 ERA). I expect a turnaround this year.

On that same note, Kyle Lohse had a 4.82 ERA in his career before 2008, including a 4.62 ERA from 05-07. In 2008 he posted a 3.78 ERA. However, I believe this was due to his 3.32 ERA at home, compared to a 4.43 ERA on the road.

While I think Snell will be better, Lohse was solid at home last year, which is why I'm not taking the Pirates in this one.
