I confess that I was getting a bit of sick of shanty soon after the start of shanty-mania a month or so back.

There was that quirky initial fun but, like most things in forumland, it started getting overdone. It was getting like, "Yes people, shanty repeatedly says baseborn and now everyone and his Aunt Cecil is saying it too. Bloody hilarious after the millionth reference."

When you're as ultra-cool as me, over-exposure is the kiss of death. I was expecting to start hearing about the word baseborn coming up in episodes of Gray's Anatomy and perhaps commercials for Doublemint Gum.

However shanty has surprised the hell out of me by keeping some freshness. He has regularly injected new concepts. The stress on hairlessness in the animal kingdom was reduced and there was more focus on the human anus.

And he started injecting some . . . what would you call it? . . . . friendliness.

I believe that under shanty's penny-ante scamming whining exterior, lives an artist.

He is still too popular around town to ever get my vote in any all-important Poster of the Month voting. I naturally gravitate towards the more obscure (kindly refer back to the concept of my extreme coolness).

But he is deserving of some props. I mean, come on. He's going to stick light bulbs in people's butts and enlighten them? That's some talent.

Mudcat, you were exactly the kind of guy that made me roll my eyes in high school.

You'd go around buying shirts of a band and playing their music non stop and telling everyone how much they rocked and how underground they were... when it turns out you were right, and their great music turns into a big record deal, the next day you show up to school wearing some other group's garbage. Someone says hey, good call on that band, and you say "Screw them man, they sold out, they are too mainstream".

This was you wasn't it?

oh sh*t, i thought this was just a phenomenon from the 80s -mid 90s, and ended soon after I left the school world. You mean it is still going on today? Even with digitized music files?

High school was quite awhile ago for me but looking back through the haze, I recognize elements of myself in that, yes.
