    Safe Ports bill goes unsigned
    Just wondered
Is there a deadline by whice Bush has to sign the bill ?
What happens if he doesnt sign in time ?
What happens if he refuses to sign ?
How many bills passed to Bush have gone unsigned ?

I wish he would refuse to sign it, but I doubt that happens. I don't know when the deadline is offhand, but I keep hearing it will be signed on Friday.

The president has 10 days to either sign a bill into law or return it to Congress. If he does nothing, it automatically becomes law UNLESS Congress has adjourned during those 10 days. In that case, non-signing amounts to a veto, known as a "pocket veto".

In this case, Congress has adjourned, so if by some miracle Bush does not sign it, it will not become law. Bear in mind, President Bush has only vetoed one bill in almost six years--a stem cell research law, about which Jesus spoke to W. personally, telling him it was evil. The chances of the Port Security Act not being approved by a fear-mongering, rubber-stamping neo-con before a critical election are about equal to the chances of Kim Jong-Il winning the next American Idol.

The reason port security became such an issue is because the administration was lambasted by the right and the left for allowing a highly reputable port operations outfit that happens to be Arab owned take over the contract for US ports. The firestorm that ensued led to the birth of this legislation. Several people on this very forum vehemently voiced their disgust with the administration for allowing the Muslims (evidently terrorists because of their religious choice) to run our ports. Your government listened to you and has now done something about it.

Remember, it's not the terrorists we're fighting, it's Islam. This is what both the right and the left are telling us with the need for this bill. It's this kind of population-wide ignorance that causes our government to think that we need assistance in all facets of our lives, and if you think the left is somehow not as guilty as the right then you're doing nothing more than playing favorites.

I certainly have my own opinions on the above. But what has it got to do with online Poker ?

What does Islam has to do with terrorists? The legislators in the US don't need a good reason to do the things they're doing, they simply need the perception of a good reason to do the things they're doing. The sad thing is that there is a general perception that online gambling is corrupting a certain part of the population, which undoubtedly it is, but because gambling is perceived as an evil in our society, it's OK to ban some form of it in the same way that it's OK to ban some forms of murder.

RickySteve, that was both hilarious and informing. Love the line . . . Bear in mind, President Bush has only vetoed one bill in almost six years--a stem cell research law, about which Jesus spoke to W. personally, telling him it was evil.

It's even funnier that it's true! Of course what else would you expect Jesus to say?

All I know is, last time I asked Jesus what he thought about online gambling, his response was - and I quote:

                            "I don't give a shaved rat's ass."
