Women's World Curling Championships sells 34 tickets
That is not a typo. That is the paid attendance for the whole round robin part of the tournament - which is a 12 team round robin spread over 14 draws over an entire week.

Okay I realize I am setting up my favorite sport (although I prefer men's over womens by a longshot but still, curling in general) for some bashing. I'm lobbing a big ole softball right down the middle. But 34 tickets? 34? It seemed noteworthy. There is some humor there.

I am seriously surprised there were not more tickets sold just to traveling Canadians. But apparently not.

The sport has obviously not caught on in Korea which is hosting. Last year's event held in Canada drew over 70K.

    hello . . . hello . . . hello . . .

Sounds like the event was organized on a dare. I can't think of anything less marketable than women's curling in South Korea.

How much was the actual attendance? There are usually dignitaries and other spectators who get free tickets for these events.

I don't know first hand. Most of the draws have been between, like, 1 and 6 in the morning so I haven't been watching at all. I basically just know what is in that article I linked.

The relevant bit relating to this question:

Thousands of tickets were given away to schools and businesses, but that didn't help bolster crowds that often lingered around 100 fans per draw.

Billed as a chance to introduce the sport to South Korea, the event drew gatherings so small that conversations between players could clearly be heard from every corner of the 3,500-seat Gangneung International Ice Rink.

Naturally, games involving the host South Koreans drew the largest crowds - but even then, the majority of fans were local schoolchildren brought in for class trips. They were noisy during the playing of the national anthems, they cheered at bizarre times during the game and they were often out of the building before the eighth end.

                and in summary

Less than 4,000 made their way to the Gangneung International Ice Rink for the entire round robin.

I wonder if they do a random "crotch check" on the athletes?

I'm guessing Korea doesn't get another shot at hosting another curling event in the future. Only time I watched some curling was during the olympics.

The upcoming Olympics in Whistler will have huge attendance for both the men's and women's curling. The joint will be rocking. (We curling folk like to get our rock puns in.) I am looking forward to that in a large, large way. Only the hockey is bigger.

I am just concerned about the diabolical Chinese women's team. I don't like what they're doing to the game on the women's side.

But I'm sure everyone knows all about that and agrees with me.

Had more interest in women's curling during the olympics since Cassie Johnson was from Bemidji, MN. Was nice to route for the Minnesota girl.
