I think it had moreso to do with them trying to "protect" the league as opposed to protecting Rice.

"Hey, nobody associated with our league is capable of doing such a heinous thing."

I wonder how this happened, did tmz buy the footage and let the NFL see it months ago or what, if tmz are some sneaky phucks, to sit on it for all this time after Godell had made his decision, they knew by showing it now the world would erupt. If tmz was super smart though they would have waiting until the Monday after Rice had played his first game, would have been an even more ratings bonanza. If the NFL was smart they would have tried to purchase the footage so it couldnt be seen by the public.

TMZ owner said they just got it shortly before releasing it.

For what it's worth, the hotel went out of business like 5 days ago so that cleared them and employees of any legal ramifications for releasing it.

Seems the NFL would have been trying like heck to do whatever for tmz to not release it, everyone knew there was a tape, someone had to know the hotel just closed and about the legal ramifications, somebody slipped up big time.

Pretty damn serious I think since his unfortunate arrival Goodell has swept many things under the rug and survived. And even though he has the majority of owners still on his side he now is facing serious backlash from just not the public, but congress, advertisers, and pc groups. At the least I wouldn't be surprised if he does survive this he's loses some power and is no longer a dictator.

It's pretty obvious this was covered up to protect the shield and if it can be proved in a court of law the league only dropped the hammer hard after the 2nd vid went public that they had already seen or knew about as a public relations move then..... Guarantee Rays people are already all over this and the Nfl will have to conceed in some way but probably just settle out of court. Either way big $$$$. I'm no lawyer btw just seems he's got a case. Some kind of wrongful termination or something in that regard. Those are tough to win I hear but I'm sure league would just settle and wanna put this behind them.
