    Cuban poverty *Video*
I shot this vid last year, I made a point of bringing the kids some toys next trip, the next video was shot a few months later when they got the first batch of gifts from the Canadian. Those boys only had an old bicycle rim and stick to play with.

Check out the "hut" these poor people live in.

          I really filmed that.

The kids are my Cuban friends boys, they live with their mother who is divorced from my pal, I met them once before in the city and he asked if I could get him out to see the boys since he split with the wife.

They are about 15 km away from the city centre.

            Gotcha

Just looked odd. As a tourist in a foreign country, I'd want to avoid any poverty-stricken areas.

Most white Cubans who had any wealth got out of Cuba in the 60's and 70's The goverment has destroyed this once great country. I hope they stop letting Cubans reaching dry land into this country. If you don't have papers there is no more entry fvck the wet foot dry foot crap. 99.9% of Cubans are economic refugees. Unlike my father and grandfather who had a Cigar factory taken away by the revolution in 59 (god to think I would own that factory now) my dad was a political refugee who would have been shot or jailed. Hate to sound like a dick, Im sure theres lots of great people still there i.e my aunts and cousins on my mothers side but the Cubans who come to the U.S now are not the same as the ones who migrated here after the revolution.

don't feel sorry for them, i will bet my last dollar they are happier than anyone here. look how happy the kids look.. even the dog looks happy.. they are all laughing, and kids are running around and playing and they are free, playing outdoors in the sun... better than most of us who stay home all day and gamble and get fat and lose money and eat bad food.. i bet they're healthier than us too.. people who are poor are not sad, they are happy cause they dont know what they're missing and dont know what it's like to have money.

plommer, no way you filmed this.. we dont hear your voice, we hear an old spanish guy talking and i doubt you'd bring cam into their area and put cam in their face like that..

Nicky, I agreed with most of what you said about happiness and such but calling me a liar when I claimed I filmed this is insulting.

Nicky I have gigabytes of pictures and movies I took with my Canon Digital Camera, its a 10 MPcamera that also does movies.

I've visited Cuba alot and take photos and movies when I get the chance.

plommer, is that you talking spanish? but isn't that insulting to the poor kids with a total stranger putting a camera into their face like that? didn't they think you were filming them to mock em or didn't they feel bad having a total stranger up close like that that they don't even know.. i would be scared and would think you're a cop or some criminal going into their territory and filming them.

i hope you at least knew them and talked with them many times before..

Nicky you don't pay attention then try to make me look like a liar/bad guy.

Of course I know those kids, I explained earlier that I'm friends with their father, I met those kids as toddlers and have been friends with their dad for 4 years now, met him on my first trip to Holguin.

He is separated from his wife for the last year and lives in the city, she moved back to the "hut" approx 15 km from the city to live with her parents, she is a native indian in Cuba and lives in extreme poverty.

The first time I visited the hut I felt bad that the boys only had a bicycle rim to play with so when I returned a few months later I brought them a new soccer ball, a kite, bubble makers, squirt guns etc.

Happy, I know there is a love/hate relationship between Cuban Americans and Cubans, it seems as though Cuban Americans know what is best for Cuba, even though most haven't been back to the island for some time.

Cubans are economic refugees, from what I've seen family life in Cuba is FAR superior to American or Canadian family life. They lack consumer goods, they have healthcare, food, education provided by the state, while that infuriates Americans it still is good for Cubans, as "brainwashed" as Cubans may be, Americans also tend to believe blindly in some things they don't even understand.

My host in Holguin is an English teacher in Cuba, he has visited his Cuban American family/friends in Florida and New Jersey and while admiring the availablility of consumer goods he wasn't otherwise impressed with America and was very happy to return to Cuba.

answer me this??? Why get on a raft cross 90 miles of shark infested water to see if you can get by Coast Guard cruisers and touch American soil????? can't be all that.
Sure some are desperate to leave, but the island has a population of over 10 million, if millions were trying to leave it would be a better story, as it stands it appears to be relatively few try to reach America via life raft or other low tech method.

I know there is much resentment towards the current Cuban government, they are seen as evil, if I remember correctly the US government is also viewed as evil by many more countries than Cuba.

The revolution served its purpose back in the day, but I agree Cubans need change for their lives to improve, the problem is that America has its own opinion on what is best for other countries even though America has its own issues to deal with.

Cubans see what other countries have and most of the Cubans I meet are very much interested in "things" ie consumer goods of quality, Cuba is severely lacking in this area , for the most part Cubans seem to be happy.

I hope Cuba becomes a democracy, I only wish the best especially since my mothers side of the family still lives there. I hope to see them again one day. It pains me to know what was and what is.
