This should be the response of every operation in this industry. If you got into this business and you didn't feel like you were sacrificing your morality then why should you feel that way simply because the religious element of a certain government tells you otherwise?

Imagine this situation: Suppose the Wire Act were not in place and just got passed by Congress. Everyone in the industry would declare that online gambling was done, and the industry would be irreparably crippled. Well, the Wire Act has been around all along yet still this industry has grown to what it is in circumference of the Act, and I assure you it will do the same in response to this lesser intrusive legislation. The only way the government gets what it wants is if institutions and players bow down without even having to enforce the legislation.

This government has done nothing but bark (not even a loud bark) and people are running away with their tails between their legs. Let's force the government to bite and apply this wildcat legislation. If they come after me, I'm more than happy to stand up for the individual rights I believe in, and I also believe firmly that I stand on solid ground with my beliefs.

I like what you said here, isetcap. But for some of us (I'm probably in the minority on this), it's just not that simple. My gut tells me to fly in the face of this bill. But, the simple fact that this is attached to a Port Security bill which, politically, is a disaster for anyone that votes "NO" to it tells me all I need to know. These politicians have no spine to explain why they might vote "NO" to a Port Security Act.

It absolutely scares me to death to think that our Republican Congress has to attach the "Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act" to a Port Security bill because it is not strong enough to pass on its own.

In regard to the Wire Act, I think the reason internet gambling boomed is because there is so much gray area to the Wire Act (no internet cable means no wire, right? ). They had to pass something current if they really wanted this boom to stop.

My answer is this: extremism of all kinds scare me to death. Extremists want to save you from yourself. This applies to religious extremism or political extremism.

Al Qaeda wants to blow us up because we have not conformed to the Muslim way of life. Extremism.

Some heavily religious Republicans want to legislate you morally so you can go to heaven. If you won't live your life the right way, then we'll pass a law making you live your life the correct way in God's eyes. Extremism.

Some Democrats don't think you know what you are doing as a consumer so they are going to tax the hell out of you because, we the Democrats, know where your money needs to be spent. We know better than you because you, Mr. Average Citizen, are too stupid to handle your own money. Extremism.

I think extremists do whatever it takes to get their point across. I can't run the risk of being thrown in jail because of what I believe. Some may call that spineless; I call it practical.

i guess i'm confused about this whole "going to jail" thing. i just can't see this ever happening from placing a wager online, no matte what rules are in effect. i definitely don't think this Bill that just passed says anything about violators will be going to jail

EBone, I don't think there's any question that this legislation can not and will not be used to prosecute any individual bettors. My response in this thread is referencing industry institutions that theoretically have much more to lose, but I understand what you mean when you say you are scared. The problem is that if you pull your money out of the mix, then you let the prohibitionists dictate the way you live your life.
